Hi there,
I built the Paia and Blacet line a while ago, and loved them enough
that when I switched to MOTM format, I transfered most of them to
MOTM-style panels. Paia cuts a lot of corners to make them cost-
effective, but in my opinion they have more character than most.
I'd stick to one format out of the two camps that have kind of chosen
sides: Paia/Blacet/EFM (smaller panels, closer knobs, 1/8" jacks) or
MOTM/Oakley (larger panels, spaced out knobs, 1/4" jacks). It's a
choice of space and money. I'd avoid mixing the two, but then I hate
wasting money/space on jack adapters and such. The cool thing is that
you can actually circumvent the official two camps by just buying the
circuit boards or kits from Paia, Blacet, EFM, Oakley, Catgirl
Synths, MAP, etc., and put them behind your own panels (blanks can be
bought for either format, or you can choose your own, or there are
some third parties that will make them for you). Actually, there is a
third format that is getting some extra support now -- Canada's
Modcan (tall panels, banana jacks) supported by www.cyndustries.com.
They're kind of expensive too.
If you get into modulars, you'll quickly find it addictive and
limited only by your wallet. But ironically (due to the virtual
analog craze) I think it's the most exciting time in modular history,
w/ some of the most stable and some of the weirdist (see
www.wiard.com) modules ever.
Good luck and keep us posted!
Scott
