Something VERY strange is happening here...

Something VERY strange is happening here...

2003-07-13 by tcdave

I composed a song using differnt patterns in my XL7. My first
attempt to build a song, something strange is happening. I built the
song with several patterns in a sequence.

Heres the problem. After building the song, I go to play it and the
beginning of each pattern, the 1st beat is missed a fraction of a
second. Its sounds crappy! Like its jumping with a stutter. I dont
know what this is so I figured it might be because I am still on
version 1.00 and have not downloaded the latest OS.

Another thing is the patterns are not playing the right instruments
either from the song mode. The musical parts are correct but the
sounds changed for some reason. Go back into pattern mode and the
sounds/intruments are fine.

This is very strange.......

First off, yes, by all means, get the 2.00 software. 1.00 had all
sorts of song mode & timing issues. 2.00 is free and available on the
web.

Second, check the "sources" for preset change info in the song menu.
There should be a screen that lets you choose whether the song or
patterns (or both) drive the program changes (as well as volume, pan,
FX, etc).

I dont have any preset changes, just pattern changes. I dont
understand "driving the program".

I'm not sure how your OS is set up, but under OS2.0 (possibly yours),
in Song View + Song Edit Mode menu 2 is EVENT SOURCE.

1. Within that menu, you have submenus: tempo, preset, volume, pan,
mix, arp, & fx.
2. Each of these has options: song events only, 1st pattern only,
all patterns, songs & patterns.

Due to the wonderful complexity and flexibility of the Command
Stations you can configure all sorts of permutations.

In song mode, the event source menu says, "Whatever else you've got
going on with all the tempo, preset, volume, pan, mix, arp & fx
settings, FOR THIS SONG, use the settings here! Only pay attention
to those settings I allow you to use here,"

It's as if when playing songs, the EVENT SOURCE is in charge and has
the choice to override (or not) changes in tempo, preset, etc. that
may exist within the components of the song.

In other words, the EVENT SOURCE is in the driver's seat.

Perhaps a more apt metaphor is that of a system administrator who
grants privileges.

Hope this helps.

One of your problems was:

> "not playing the right instruments either from the song mode."

The technical term from "instruments" is "presets" (in E-mu speak) or
"programs" (in MIDI speak, as in "program change") or "patches" (in old
analog synth guy speak).

In any case, go to the second screen under the Song Edit menu. You'll
be on a screen EVENT SOURCES. Cursor to the 2nd line and change to
"preset" and select "patterns only".

This may or may not solve your problem. First step again is to
definitely get 2.00. Oh, and if you're one of the folks for which it's
"OS-update-but-can't-figure-it-out-Day" =), make sure both MIDI in AND
out is connected, and boot your XL-7 holding down the cursor till it
says "Searching for OS..."

Could someone please explain to me what this means?

"There should be a screen that lets you choose whether the song or
patterns (or both) drive the program changes (as well as volume, pan,
FX, etc)."

in pattern mode the "pattern" plays fine but when I go in song mode,
my patterns sounds crappy and the contollers are weeirded out.

I know I typed a detailed answer, but I must have gotten interrupted
by a phone call and never posted it. Here's it in a nutshell:

1. Edit Song
2. Go to Event Source
Paraneters: tempo, preset, volume, pan, mix, arp, fx
Options: song events only, 1st pattern only, all patterns
             song & patterns

This puts YOU in the driver's seat. It overrides all the backseat
drivers.

Hope this makes sense.
