I really, really love the World Expedition ROM, done by list subscriber
Ed Mann. It has zillions of plucked instruments and other stuff I love.
And after hearing the claim about all the other computer stuff I've
bought, this ROM actually DOES have bells and whistles!
(My other ROMs are the XL7, the Mo Phatt and the Sounds of the Proteus
(which I got for the piano.))

I'd second that idea. I love the World Expedition. The ethnic flutes and guitars are really unique, and the percussion and drum samples are amazing. Ed Mann, who put it together, worked with Zappa among others, so he knows his stuff.

I'll third that, though I'm not very interested in guitar sounds as I'm a guitarist. I actually traded someone a Line6 delay for a PlanetEarth. I loved it so much it got me to sell my Roland MC-307 and get an XL-7. Now I have a ROM dead PlanetEarth and an XL-7 with a World Expedition, Proteus and by monday I should have a Beat Garden ROM. I think I'll be good for a while sound wise. Mark Sottilaro --- Stephen Wither <smwither2002@...> wrote: > I'd second that idea. Yeah, you need to use MIDI cables to update the OS, you can't use USB for
that. Check the FAQ's for more info.

You don't need a "midi sound controller" but you do need some kind of midi interface, which you probalby already have. If you have a sound blaster card, you probably have a midi interface built in and you would just need the appropriate cable. Yo! What's up homie? I'm looking to purchase 3 roms next month as they have drastically dropped the prices to $100 for just about all of them and some others around $130. My question is this. Did you have any trouble installing them? I'm just a little paranoid that I will lose my music while installing the new roms. I know better though. I can't wait to get them bad boys. Check it. By the end of next month, my home studio will be complete. It'll be complete for me. Here's a rundown of what I will be running: Better computer-Gateway, MP7, Pop Rom, B3 Organ Rom, World Expedition Rom, Sound Forge 6.0, Cool Edit Pro 2.1, Mackie 1202 Mixer, Behringer Truth Monitors. I got the mp hooked up to my 88key keyboard/piano so I play notes with the keyboard. Next week, I'll get a new computer chair with a floor mat so I can slide from piece to piece. I'm getting a table to put my mp7 on by itself. It's gone be tight. By the end of the year, I'll have everything. You'll need to come up and give me some tips on the mixer. calvin alley <ceonubeat@...> wrote: whats up, yea tha proteus pop collection have all of them matter of im aimming 2 get that rom and it also has a lot of real piano, brass, wood wind etc.........! Did you have any trouble installing them? I'm just a little paranoid that I will lose my music while installing the new roms. >>>It's very easy to do, each ROM comes with instructions on how to install them as well. You won't lose any data, just take your time and make sure you don't have a static charge while doing it. Also, you should ALWAYS, ALWAYS back up you data before doing this type of stuff, just in case. Check the FAQ for details on doing this. <<< I got the mp hooked up to my 88key keyboard/piano so I play notes with the keyboard. Next week, I'll get a new computer chair with a floor mat so I can slide from piece to piece. I'm getting a table to put my mp7 on by itself. It's gone be tight. Interesting huh? >>>Well, you can certainly record audio with a MIDI disc recorder, but how are you going to trigger it? You coudl press play, but then you can only play one sound at a time. Might want to rethink getting a sampler, depending on your needs. Also, Mini disc recorders use a form of data compression to fit all that audio onto a smaller disc. Might be fine for live use, but I'd be hesitant to use it for studio work. Just a heads up. <<< rEalm [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Quick note - scrap the Gateway PC plans, and go Dell if you're doing the off-the-shelf thing! Gateway, while budget, have always been a nightmare to upgrade or switch parts in. My Dell, on the other hand, handles 2 soundcards without a single crash, and I've literally gotten one Blue Screen of Death in the last 15 months. /.e --- In xl7@yahoogroups.com, Cornell <brothacee@y...> wrote: > Yo! Another quick reply - the Yamaha MG10/2 mixer is comparable to the Mackie you mentioned, and about 1/4 the price. It's also showing as 99.98% quiet on my spectrogram at full volume with no signal.. might be another way to save a few hundred... maybe put the money to a Dell? *whistles innocently* /.e

RE: > Also, I saw an article where you could a minidisk recorder as a sampler. I'm going to get one of these too so when it's time I can learn how to some sampling. I'd rather by a hundred dollar minidisk that will work just as fine instead of spending mad loot on a real sampler. Interesting huh?< There's a lot more to a sampler than just recording and playing back sounds. Samplers transpose the samples over the keyboard, loop the samples so you can sustain sounds, allow you to adjust the pitch in case your sample isn't in tune with other gear and a WHOLE lot more. If you want to do sampling - a minidisc is NOT the way I would go. You could use it to GET samples for your sampler, but not AS a sampler. The better the sampler, the more you can do with it and the better the quality of everything it does will be. Still, you can get very good results with the older (now cheap on the used market) samplers, though upgrading them can be a nightmare and they don't have as much memory as the new ones. For my money, I'd wait and get a real sampler when you can find one at a good price. You will be very glad you did. Some things are worth waiting for. Or you could always go with a software sampler... Or if you really need something cheap and right now, check out the Yamaha SU10 or whatever their latest model is, I think it is the SU200. For sampling, a minidisc is going to be very frustrating and ultimately probably completely useless. It's not made for that. Samplers aren't cheap, but there's a reason for it - they are very complex machines. An E-mu sampler is essentially a command station (minus the quality sequencer) which can import anything and mix it and resample and tweak the living hell out of it. You're not going to do that with a minidisc recorder. No way. However, as to the sound quality with minidiscs, I read that the degradation of the sound quality has been greatly exaggerated by the purists. The problem with recording to minidisc is if you make multiple copies in series from the original master. The sound is degraded some minute amount each time you record ( I think it was like .3% - that was a while back, though, so I could easily be wrong). So, if you made an original and then made a copy of the original to minidisc and then somebody else made a copy of your copy it will show the degradation a lot more. But, supposedly, the first recording is close enough to CD quality that most pros can't tell the difference without doing a sound analysis of it. I never did get one as the market was so marginal at the time I worried about them just disappearing from lack of interest. That plus the fact the data minidiscs were way overpriced and they don't hold a lot when you use them for multi track recording, which was what I was thinking about at the time... From my research, though, the sound quality didn't look bad enough to dismiss the technology. Of course, now the new thing is 32 bits... It won't do that, but I'm not sure that isn't a scam of roughly the same type of weird logic used in reverse. "Hey, we can sell them a .3% increase in fidelity they won't be able to hear, but they'll pay twice as much for it - beauty!" Cd's still sound pretty good to me and they're 16 bit... (I run my system through a BBE, though - best $100 I ever spent.) But hey, I'm getting older so maybe my hearing is going. I don't know. Maybe all that loud music for years and years...
