Question from the new guy

Question from the new guy

2003-07-04 by tcdave

I wanted to know how to make a song. I have my song broken into
different patterns. Such as a patteren for the chorus and another
pattern for the verse.... etc.....

how do I get the XL-7 to string them up?

All I have been doing is changing the patterns while its plays
another pattern and pressing "home". Then it palys into that pattern
when the previous pattern is done.

By todays standards everything is dated as soon as it is released but
sooner or later dated becomes the in thing again. Im looking forward
to getting the Sounds of the ZR rom as well as Beat Garden and Proteus
Pop Collection eventually. Sorry I cant help with your song question
as Ive not even covered that myself.

well, we have a pretty good synth architecture in the xl, even with
those dated presets, i would think you could make something
pretty 'new'...i'm only beginning to get into its many different
filters and stuff...cool and weird stuff can happen...fun. i guess
used creatively, just about anything can sound 'new'...maybe i'm a
bit strange, but as soon as i fiddle with a synth...in the stores or
anywhere else, i start messing with the settings and such...presets
never quite feel 'right' to me...hmm...well, back to the beats...

RE: [xl7] Re: Question from the new guy

2003-07-05 by Patrick Dohman

Well you're not the only one. I very rarely leave a preset unedited on
any piece. I think it is a combination of wanting something unique and
looking to make something sound better. Presets often sound somewhat
generic to me as if they are meant to be tweaked. "The really pro
patches are hard to improve" It's not surprising that non synth players
often do not share this view. For example quite a few guitarists I know
would never think of editing a patch and are much more focused on the
sound's melodic placement. It is similar IMHO to the way I view effects
as part of the sound rather than a dressing a lot of times adding reverb
to a snare will change the direction of an entire pattern for me. I
remember an experiment me and friend had with his notron and the attack.
Just by changing kits and leaving the pattern the same would change the
style completely from rock to dub for example.

Well, on a ROMpler like these boxes, I must say I
don't change much in the way of presets and I am a
guitarist. There doesn't seem much point to me. So
many sounds, so many very good. Spend the time
playing. I do like to fuck with the output using a
KAOSS pad or my Lexicon MPX1 though. On the other
hand, I have a Korg MS2000R and I do like to edit
patches on that. It's a totally different animal
though. Much more tweakable IMO.

DigiD,

Thanks for you help. You were the only one out of 5 replys to
mention anything about my initial problem. I cant believe that no
one has any idea how ot make patterns string up into a song.

Select Blank Song

Press record twice.

Turn big knob to select pattern for step one.

Continue adding patterns using steps above.

When done turn big knob to stop.
