Tip for using external gear

Tip for using external gear

2003-05-28 by dwoodaman

After some interaction with Emu's tech support (and some help from
rEalm, of course!) I found out what I would call a 'secret' key
combination that must be used if you want to run external gear from
your XL or MP.
What I do is run all my other midi devices (groove boxes in my case)
from the midi b output. I set the track channel output to multib, and
then in the event viewer add the program changes that I want to send.
Note that you cannot have two events at the exact same time. Then in
the event viewer I set the channel I want the program change to occur
on, and the program change number of course.
Here is the trick: you MUST hit the REPEAT button to save the change
in the event viewer, before you save the changes to the pattern. So
if you have several devices, you have to hit repeat after you put in
the info for each device or it won't save.
Not very intuitive, but at least it works.
Hope this will save someone some time!

Before this confuses too many people, I thought I'd chime in briefly.
The reason you're pressing the "Repeat" button is because you're
*inserting* program changes. If you didn't hit repeat after each
program change, you'd simply be editing the *same* event.

Think about a software sequencer's list view. If you had one program
change on a track, and repeatedly edited the channel, you wouldn't
expect it to keep each different event, right? You'd expect to have to
press "Insert" on your keyboard to add another event to the list. This
is exactly what the "Repeat" button does.

-Aaron

PS. You can have all sorts of events at the exact same time, just not
two *identical* events at the same time. (i.e. two C#3's at tick 0)

I happily stand corrected! So I ******should****** be able to send
prg chng say 05 on channel 5 and prg chg 5 on channel 10 with no
problem. This would be advantageous to me, since I typically have the
same patch number on two of my grooveboxes.
thanks again for the explanation, and no shit this group rocks!

factory reset

2003-09-30 by Greg Waltzer

What is the command sequence for doing a factory reset?
I didn't see it in the manual.

Will this initialize all of the sequences/patterns?
Or is there another way to do this?
Will it have any effect on the user bank of arpeggiator patterns?

If possible, I would like to erase all of the sequences, but keep the
user arps.

Thanks

Greg,

It's the same for all platforms. Hold the cursor (< >) keys at
start up which will put you into the diagnostics mode. From there,
scroll to the function you want to perform. There is one for sound
data and sequence data also. Make sure you pick what you want to
reset.

ok, the two options (in diagnostic mode) seem to be:
1. initialize all user data
2. initialize all data except seq

So I guess that "all user data" would wipe out my arp patterns, right?
They're not my own patterns, just the ones that came with the unit.
And option 2 doesn't erase the sequences, which is what I want to do.
It seems the only way is to manually delete them one at a time.

The arp patterns in the user data are duplicated of the ROM so they
can be replaced.

Whoa! Unless you back up your user arps, they CANNOT be replaced from the
factory ROM. Make sure you dump them to an external sequencer first!!!!

He said in his post that they were "not" his arp patterns, see beow:

I guess it was the way it was worded from the first sentence to the
next. So he could start from scratch and create his own now.

You're right, my bad. I just wanted to make sure no one thought that
their own User Arps were stored as part of the ROM. Sorry about that.

Just to clarify then,
There is a bank of "factory" user arps (bank 0).
Unlike the presets, this is not a duplicate of one of the rom banks.
So I assumed that these will be erased when I do a reset.
However, it's also possible that they are actually on the rom and get
copied into ram when the reset is done. Can anyone who has done a reset
confirm that this happens?

Check the link here Greg and see if it helps:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/xl7/files/Command%20Station%20Data/ROM%
20Arp%20Patterns/

I know that when I did these forms, I noticed the duplicates from the
ROM (Bank 2)were in the user bank so what I did was when Rob Papen
came out with user arps that were on his new TSCY ROM, was to load
those into my user location on my P2K, XL-1 and XL-7. 100 free
patterns that don't look for a ROM ID, they are just patterns that
load in any P*K series, *K-6 series and XL or MP series alike.

patch compatibility question

2003-10-02 by Greg Waltzer

If I do a sysex dump of patches from an XL-1, will I be able to load
them into my XL-7?
