Which ROM Boards?

Which ROM Boards?

2003-05-20 by rayisfab

I've ordered the Beat Garden rom for the XL7. I'm looking to buy the
Techno Synth and the Protozoa. Is the Techno Synth an essential buy
for techno/trance as I've read that some XL7 ownwers don't rate it
that much?

I'd like to have a good bread and butter set of sounds for music
other than dance. That's why I'm looking at the Protozoa but I
couldn't find any demo's of it. Is it worth buying? I've got a few
GM sound sets on my computer so I want more than just another GM
sound set. Does the Protozoa have good sound quality and variety?

Cheers!

I think the techno synth construction yard presets are sweet. lots of
sweeping ambient washes, deep bass tones, and some phat drums...

The World Expedition is a superb ROM. It has dozens of ethnic drums and percussion, as well as woodwinds and a few others. A great addition to the XL7, IMHO.

If you are looking for EMU's bread-n-butter sounds in an add on ROM
check out the Proteus Pop ROM. It has the same sounds as the Proteus
2500. It is the bread-n-butter sounds for dance crowd. I don't think
you will be disappointed. In my opinion it works well for pop,
rock, and R-n-B. But, everyone has different set of ears - check it out.

i bought the techhno synth rom last week (2nd hand), but i have to say i'm a
bit disappointed..
i't got a lot of useable techno-sounds (chords especially), but also lots
and lots of kind of old fashioned sounds as well as a lot of percussion
sounds that all seem to be variations of 909 samples. compared to the XL-7
or Mo Phatt rom i think it's kinda weak and one-dimensional. only a couple
of presets get my inpsiration going (like a lot of the XL-7 sounds do (by
the way did you hear the new Ken Ishii album? I'm sure he has an XL 7 or
otherwise maybe Xtreme lead too)

having said that, I've only played with the techno synth ROM for a day or 3
ad it might be that I'll discover all kind of hidden treasures, and maybe
have to dive a bit deeper into the sounds to make them suit my own
style/sound/emotions
best thing seems to be to hear the sounds yourself in a shop or whatever..

cheers, Quazar, Amsterdam

I'll second that, it's the reason I got it, and it's definitely not
disappointed in that regard. I'd say I use it more than the XL-7 ROM in
fact, even for dance stuff.

I wouldn't get the Protozoa rom myself. The Proteus Pop is way
better, but it's also more expensive. Also, the Protozoa is only
16mb where as the Pop is 32 mb. The Protozoa is all from synths that
are now 10 years old, so it is quite dated.

I am the engineer for a small upstart studio in my church. The main producer is using an MPC as his sequencer and drum machine. I do some production but not much. After playing with an mp-7 in the store I loved the sounds. I will be ordering one as soon as they are back in stock at either EMU or American Music. (if anybody knows where I can get one BRAND NEW before June let me know). My question is what ROM would be good for adding that melodic component to my music. This will be my first piece of equipment for making tracks and I am choosing the MP-7 because of the expandability and I think it will be an excellent complement to the MPC in our studio.

Musician's Fiend has them in stock for $699... and XL-7s for $499.

Since a Pure Phatt ROM is $249 I would recommed you buy an XL-7 and a Pure Phatt ROM (the rom from the MP-7) - it's like getting an XL-7 rom for $50.

As far as melodic, general purpose stuff, I'd recomend the Pop Rom.

Re: Which ROM Boards?

Thanks everyone for your advice. This is such an excellent user
group IMO. I think I'll try out the Pop and TSCY in the shop. If
they haven't got the Pop set up then I'll listen to the Proteus 2500
to get an idea of the sounds.

I'm so pleased with the XL7. It's immediately rewarding and a very
responsive synth and sequencer - a refreshing change to using Sonar
and soft synths. Combined I think hardware and software are
unbeatable now whereas before I got the XL7 I swore by software
alone.

I'm also impressed by this user group. It's the greatest addition to
the XL7 and I've already got such a lot of help and advice from
reading the posts. I can't tell you what a relief it is finding that
I don't have to rely on tech support alone. I didn't realise there
was this type of support for hardware as well as software. Gushing
praise mode over. :)

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
