SP303?

SP303?

2003-05-01 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

What do you want to use it for? Just triggering the occasional 1 shot
sample, or used with sequencing on the XX-7? I'm getting pretty close to
getting a Korg ES-1 for the same thing, it's a bit more flexible IMO. Not
only can you trigger samples manually, it's very easy to set up a sequence
on the fly too. After owning my ER-1 for years and loving it, I heartily
recommend the Korg stuff, very solid sound, and easy to use.

"What EMU should really do is come up with a companion Sampler/FX
unit that would go along side the xx7's perfectly. I mean hell,
sampling is one of the things that you guys to best... If you do,
make sure it comes with compression!!!"

Anyone have any experience with the SP-303? I am thinking about
picking this up for a decks and fx setup with my MP-7.

I'm interested in sequencing with it foremost.
I'm trying to get my MP-7/live skills sharp enough to start
incorporating it into my DJ sets. I have a ways to go but in the
meantime I wanted 1.) The ability to sample 2.) I gotta have some
external efx and 3.) Price. Bang for your buck. The $300 price tag
looked good for getting a touch of sampling and efx. And I'm really
into efx, since all I do is techno/electro related.

At first I was just looking at a Kaoss pad, but I figured if that was
$300 too, why not go for the SP and get some sampling. Anyway, thanks
for the heads up on the ES-1. Most of the reviews I found on the SP
had the ES-1 right next to it. I'm gonna check it out.

The only problem with having the SP303 in your set and wanting to sequence
with it, is that you'd really need to use the MP-7 to do the sequencing,
which may or may not be the most flexible, depending on your needs. If
you're always going to use the same sample with the same MP-7 pattern,
then it's not a big deal. But if you want to sample on the fly or change
up your samples depending on the crowd, then the Sp303 may not be the best
source since you'd have to have the sample triggering pre-programed into
the MP-7, including all the right PC commands.

Kind of a weird market, there's nothing out there that does every thing
I'd look for in a live sampler. The ES-1 has the easiest sampling and
sequencing features, and good effects, but it's limited (IMO) by low
memory, 33kHz sample rate, and you can't name your samples anything
useful, just numbers. The SP303 is similiar, but it doesn't have easy
sequecning at all and the effects are so so. My personal choice would be
the Roland sp808, which I used to own and love. Plenty of storage space,
KICK ASS effects (some of the best I've heard for dance music), nice pads
for triggering samples, and you can name your samples so they're easy to
find. Downside is that it's not something that would be super easy to
pogram sequences on live, at least from what I remember though it's been
awhile, and it's more expensive too.

Re: SP303?

2003-05-01 by Ronn ... really it is

on the upside, the SP-808 can easily be upgraded to the EX version,
incl new effects. There is also a .wav conversion program for those
with a Zip in there computer. <(I've done those) Many users have been
putting in 750MB Zip drives lately. <(havent done that yet)

on the downside, its a Roland product, so there is NO official
support for it. The manuals are hard to come by, and I hear they were
beastly at best anyway. There is a video manual for the original 808
that is readily available and is pretty good.
You can find 808s and 808EXs for about $500.

Yeah, I converted my Sp808 to an EX model, very easy to do, and much
better than the pink iMac case IMO. I believe our own drK was the first
person to discover the regular models could also use the 250MB Zip Drives
in fact. The manual was definitely not the greatest, that's for sure!

Re: SP303?

I have an SP808ex, I like the red case :p.
It is an excellent companion to the XX-7, I use my MP-7 to sequence
the pads. You can't do drum programming on the SP808 due to the Zip
drive being a little slow, but thats not really a big deal cause I
use my computer to chop up any samples anyway, and essentially the
EMU so excels at drum programming I only use the SP808 for
more "organic" loops, grooves and phrases, while the EMU is for the
drum solos and fills. Furthermore the SP808has a line in (and mic in)
and a mini mixer, so the two can be used in combination without an
external mixer which is great for a small livePA rig that does
everything!! And also obviously you can send as much of the line in
to the SP808 effects.
Incidentally the new thing is to put a 750MB zip in the SP808 giving
it 2.5hours sampling time.
Im not saying it is a flawless device, roland sux serious ass in
terms of support and manuals, but the SP808 forum is very helpful in
learning.

Essentially the SP808 is a mini recording studio with tracks,
slicing/resampling, effects, and arranging functions. This is fairly
different to the MPC series or the ES-1 which also are MIDI
sequencing oriented. Because the XX-7 is such a MIDI beast, not to
mention the wavetables are essentially professionally sampled drums
anyway, this means that the Two units are PERFECT compliments to each
other, where one excels, the other is no good. There is no
funcionality overlap at all.
I love them, they are so cute together.

RE: [xl7] Re: SP303?

2003-05-01 by Andre Lewis

I totally agree on the SP808, I finally got rid of mine simply because I
allready had two other samplers and gigasampler. I do miss the effects like
slicer, the eq cuts, phaser etc etc. If I weren't allready using all the other
equipment I would have been pretty happy with just an XL7 and the SP808 (which
can be upgraded to the sp808ex spec). The hardest part of using it though
wasn't the four sample pad limitation, it was the fact that if the zip drive got
too busy it wouldn't play back correctly (It streams everything directly off
disk, nothing in memmory (!!!)) so I couldn't do a lot of the DNB tracks I
needed to do. I wasn't trying to use it as a typical user was though I'm sure.
Great piece of gear, manual is so so but once you wrap your head around the way
the 808 is organized it's not so bad.
