Alarming behavior...

Alarming behavior...

2003-04-29 by soundcrafter

Hi all... my XL is beginning to develop a habit that makes me worry a
bit...

I'll be playing out, editing a pattern or a song, and as I push
various buttons, my display begins to fritz out... It begins to
slowly display random characters... they don't look like random parts
of the LCD lighting up, but maybe some sort of foreign alphabet?!

At first, I can clear it up by pushing the PATTERN or SONG button...
but eventually it takes over so that my LCD is just full of these
characters and won't change at all. I have to power it down
completely.

But THEN... the next time I power it up, it freezes... all the LEDs
light, the LCD lights up but displays nothing, and the unit is
unresponsive. Sometimes if I boot into test mode or credits mode, it
will kick back in, but I find most of the time I have to disconnect
it from the mains and let it sit for a while before it will boot
again! It doesn't seem to affect my user data.

I can't really pin down a single cause or pattern, but I know that it
normally begins to happen if I'm pressing buttons rapidly, or if I
work on the machine for a long period of time (maybe 3-4 hours) Once
the strange characters start to appear, there's nothing I can do... a
crash is inevitable...

And to top it off... I think it's getting more frequent, and crashing
faster with each occurrence! That could just be me getting gear-
paranoid though...

Any thoughts on this one, group? I'm getting nervous about even
turning my XL on... I'm afraid I'm doing some sort of damage!

Thanks

SC

Does this only happen while you're playing out? I had very some weird
issues last week during my live set too:

- 16 measure patterns looped for 32 measures, even though 17-32 were
blank.
- Patterns wouldn't switch even though they were queued correctly, the
current pattern would play indefinitely.
- Pressing Edit+Track Mute to select a new track would cause the XL-7 to
play random sounds not from the Preset assigned to that channel.
- Lots of other stuff that killed the set.

Never seen any of these before, and haven't seen them since no matter what
I try. After some talks with Emu, we are both inclined to agree it was
most likely issues with the mains power at the venue, it was probably too
low. I know I'm buying one of those cheap USB power supplies ($40) from
Office Depot to remedy the situation in the future, might want to look
into that as well.

I had this same problem a few weeks ago after
installing a SIMM. I would check and make sure that
all cables and screws are in tight. A loose cable
will definately cause the symptom where all the lights
are lit and nothing appears on the LCD. If that does
not fix it try reseating all of the SIMMS that you
have installed. That is what fixed my problem when I
had it.

I would check internal connections. Particularly any chip that sits in a socket.
WARNING, if your not comf0ortable opening the box or really don't know what
your doing, ask someone who is.
Oen the unit. Touch the powersupply to release any static electricy you may
be charged with. Press firmly any chip that sits into a socket. You'll most likely
hear minute sounds ad the chips snug up with the sockets.
If you move equippment around frequently, the connections can become a
little loose. Vibrations from banging on the buttons and expansion from heat
as the unit warms up can compound these problems and reveal intermittent
problems.
I used to work with lots of touring bands and this was a problem from the gear
ridding in trucks around the country and around the world. I even had
problems with some of my gear from the move from LA to Seattle. More than
50% of the problems I've seen with all gear can be fixed this way.

xx-7's have power supply covers, but many products do not. Even after being
turned off, many power supplies will carry their charge. DANGER, you will
be shocked.

Right on, I will check this out when I get home... It makes sense,
because I just recently had the unit shipped to me... maybe there are
just some loose connections or chips that need to be re-seated.

Thanks, I'll let you know how it turns out...

I agree on the power issue. I've encountered that before in many
instances. It usually results from too many things pluged into the
same circuit. Usually the synth has enough power to boot part way and
that's about it. Usually when I play out I bring extension cords and
power strips. That way I can find my own recepticles if needed.
