a few more questions and request for opinions

a few more questions and request for opinions

2003-04-28 by dwoodaman

Hey group -
It seems I am trying to convince myself to buy either the MP7 or the
XL7, based a lot on its sequencing capabilities to use with my other
grooveboxes. I have listened to the mp3s on the emu site but still I
am wondering: are the drum sets similar on both machines? For preset
loops, can you edit these and change the loops? Can you change
paramaters on the drum samples themselves, like start point, attack,
etc?
And seeing the hundreds of drum samples available, does anyone know
what the difference is with the new machine that is coming out?
Is one machine better than the other for getting lots of analog
sounds? Are the few pianos and strings pretty much the same on both
machines?
Sorry, I realize these are all very subjective questions! and
probably not too many people have both cards in their machines.
Any comments most appreciated, and you will be held harmless if I end
up buying one.
thx
Dana

Thre are no built in drum loops in the xx-7's I would personally say
that the drums are good in both the MP and XL, and it ultimately
depends on the style of music you're producing. I produce dnb and
find a need to have both roms. You can pretty much edit anything you
want with EMU's engine.... ASDR (attac, sustain, decay, release)
envelopes can be set up for volume, filter, lfo's, pitch, you name
it. start points can be set as well. you can layer up to 4 voices
per preset and also layer up to 4 presets together (i think, I've
never gotten that far :))

It's an awesome machine, just buy one dammit

I have listened to the mp3s on the emu site but still I am wondering: are
the drum sets similar on both machines?

>>>There may be some overlap in a few of the base samples, but I think
they are quite different. <<<

For preset loops, can you edit these and change the loops?

>>>The XX-7's don't really have loops per se, just midi sequences that
trigger individual notes. You can of course edit these sequences and the
presets they address. <<<

Can you change paramaters on the drum samples themselves, like start
point, attack, etc?

>>>Not on every single drum hit, but you can make these types of changes
to the drum presets. <<<

And seeing the hundreds of drum samples available, does anyone know what
the difference is with the new machine that is coming out?

>>>We don't have ny information on the new box other than it will be
identical to the current XX-7's, but with a new Drum ROM. <<<

Is one machine better than the other for getting lots of analog sounds?

>>>No. <<<

Are the few pianos and strings pretty much the same on both machines?

>>>I've heard the MP-7 doesn't have a good piano, I don't remember seeing
one in the XL-7 either. I bought the P2500 ROM and the piano in there is
quiet nice for a ROMpler. <<
