Master FX settings question

Master FX settings question

2003-04-19 by drsmith2k

Hi,

I'm trying to get my head around the FX section - mainly the master
FX. Am I right in thinking that 'master FX' are saved with a pattern?
So whenever a pattern is recalled, the FX will always change to
whatever the settings were when that pattern was saved?

Is there any way to override this - so if I recall a multisetup then
it's FX will override any future pattern changes?

Maybe I'm gettig confused. I have this song 'constructed' and I
wanted to add some reverb without having to change every single
pattern that the song uses. Is that possible?

Would it be better to use a single preset to control the FX?

Any help much appreciated!

Thanks,
drs2k

In short, I think the best way to address the FX situation is to have
a master FX preset set up for each of your patterns. The sends on
each channel are saved with the pattern, but that's just saying which
FX bus each channel is to use, not the actual FX or the amounts.

Also, having a master FX preset on each pattern (or for ALL your
patterns, depending) will let you control the FX sends in realtime by
assigning preset patchcords in your preset. I have multiple presets
like 'delay/distortion2' and 'room2/chorus5' depending on what sounds
good with which pattern.

The send busses are another thing altogether. Because I have an
outboard FX unit, I use send2(sub1) as an FX send/return. It works
out like:

send1: dry
send2: outboard sampler/FX
send3: FX1
send4: FX2

You can add as much or as little of each of your master FX to either
send3 or send4. Typically I have my snare on send3 for delay FX or
reverb and whatever bass or lead on send4.

Remember: While the FX are either set up in the global or with a
master preset, the sends are saved in each pattern, even though they
are also available via the global menu. I think I got all that right.

Also, see my previous post on how to hook up FX knobs on a preset to
the programmable knobs.

Thanks for that. I've been playing around and found that you can also
save FX and Send routings with the Song - which is pretty much what I
wanted to do. I have the Event Source in the Song Menu set to 'song
events only' for mix and fx.

The only oddity is that on recalling the song after power up, the
send for Ch.1A is always wrong. It's consistently set to [send I set
it to]+1. My patterns have data on this channel, but it's always
muted at present. All other channels seem to recall fine. buggette?

Anyway, when I get the hang of things I'll try out the master FX
preset stuff you mentioned.

Thanks,
drs2k

I do happen to know that the Sends are saved on a per-track basis
based on a simple cc event. If you insert a cc:79 event for
whichever track is fixed to Ch.1A you *might* be able to get around
your bug.

Use the following values dependant on where you wanna send the
channel:

v:0 = use preset
v:1 = send1
v:2 = send2
v:3 = send3
v:4 = send4

Hope this helps.

Joe's right. While the FX settings (type, amounts, paramters) can be
set to "use song events only", send choice is up to the pattern.
Simply set it the send you want in pattern mode and save the pattern.

Hey, whatdayaknow - that seems to do the trick!

Thanks,

OK, but if Sends can't be saved as part of a Song, then how does the
following work:

1) Create 2 identical songs A & B (using Copy Song)
2) Select Song B and goto MIX OUTPUT and change the send for a
particular channel n.
3) Exit the Global Menu
4) Save Song B

I can now recall Song A or Song B and the Send for channel n changes
accordingly. Note that I haven't altered any patterns or recalled any
multisetups? Just curious...

You're right, I lied. (not intentionally! =)

"Mix" is selectable in the song mode "use" list, just like FX is.
Chances are that if set to use song & patterns, the pattern is winning.
The song only saves mix settings for channels you record into the song
track.

I'd recommend in general to save your mix settings with the pattern.
If what you're after really is to be able to put the SAME pattern in
different songs with different send *selections* (not amounts!), then
by all means, use the song track to insert an event for that channel
and pick "use song events" for mix.

Ahhh - thank you, at least I'm not going mad :-)
That would also explain why Ch.1 Send setting weren't being saved -
that was the only channel for which I had no Controller data on the
Song Track.

Thanks,
drs2k
