can I drive the rx7 with a keyboard and get chord changes

can I drive the rx7 with a keyboard and get chord changes

2003-04-19 by tetra_b

hello
I do realtime improvisation on a roland eg 101 groovekeyboard
is it possible to drive the rx7 with the eg 101, so all those
sounds of the rx7 transpose in realtime to the right key?
right now I can trigger the rx7 to start at the same time the
roland starts, but the speed is not ajusting at all.

thanks for any help roger

I suppose you could drive an RX-7 with any object you like, but you
might get pulled over. Though I suppose with the twin-turbo version,
you might be able to outrun the cops...

All joking aside, I'm not *quite* sure I understand what you're asking,
but I'll give it a shot. I assume you're trying to sync up the XL-7
tempo-wise to the EG 101. To do that, you'll need to have the EG101
transmit MIDI clock, and have the XL-7 sync to it (by dialing the tempo
all the way counter-clockwise till it says "ext").

As far as the realtime transpose thing, the XL-7 doesn't do that. You
could, however, have the EG 101 actually play the notes on the XL-7,
but I have a feeling that's not what you were intending to do...

you must be a proud owner of a supra twin turbo,
the way you answered my e-mail, with the speed of light

hello Aaron,
thank you for your fast response.
so does it mean that even the bass-line cannot be changed
via keyboard from one key to another?
I am new to this, having a jazz and classical background.
the drum patterns are very exciting but why are there no
harmony changes possible? I think it would be nice, that
when I play an A mayor 7 chord all those interesting background
noises would follow suit and do the same.

thank you for your kind support,

roger

Nah, I wish. I drive an old Porsche 928...

I think you're confusing the XL-7 with an "auto-accompaniment" unit.
It is a sequencer into which you can record your own tracks into. It's
not really designed to create backing tracks on its own like a
"Casio-style" keyboard. It does have an arpeggiator, but I'm sure
that's not anywhere near what you're expecting.

Hello - I made some funky 8 bar one chord patterns when I first got my xl7. I play guitar a bit and couldn't resist a plugging in and playing along. Of course I soon wanted some good chord changes. Instead of sequencing a long song I'll make a 16 bar pattern in the root chord and on another track I will write an alternate chord pattern. This is usually sufficient for jamming around a simple chord pattern (just use the mute buttons). Of course if you write something complex you can assemble the whole thing in pieces using song mode.

As mentioned earlier, this machine is not really designed as an accompanying instrument. They make gear that reads your chord changes for sure. My father uses one that does vocal harmony on the fly amazingly. I have a Yamaha personal musical assistant, pma-7 I believe. Using it's patterns and things I can program whole songs full of chord changes and all the instruments change accordingly. Only problem is that you have to use "it's" patterns. The xl7 is way more challenging and has far more possibilities. You can write the whole score, build every instrument from scratch and play/sequence every single note. Cut, paste, edit... try other instruments or wave forms, loop, mix...transpose some or all of the individual parts, edit every single note again and again. You do it all. There isn't any middle ground between the two types of machines as far as I know. The xl7 is a challenge but I like using it more and more each day. And 2.0 made it even better. Have fun.
