RE: [xl7] OS 2.0 / digital out problem

Sounds like the Tascam isn't set to use the XL7 as a clock master, you are
definately going to run into problems with out of sync clock, especially over
longer periods of time. Also make sure the digital format is the same as the
Tascam epects, AES or SPDIF. These are headers on the digital packets but they
are different enough to cause prollems.

Hope this helps,
Andre

I have been using the SPDIF output on my XL7 for a while now with no
problems. However, after upgrading to OS 2.0 I have started to
notice a lot of crackles and pops from the XL7 which is connected to
a Tascam TMD-1000 digital mixer. I always leave the XL7 on (so I
can illuminate my mixers from the goose-neck lamp), however the
longer I leave it on the worse the problem gets sometimes causing
VERY loud pops on my monitors. I have to shut-down and restart the
XL7 and the problem will be resolved temporarily, but eventually
starts up again. Oh... and I also get a digital input error on my
Tascam which I nver used to see before.
Anyone else seen this with OS 2.0?

RE: [xl7] Re: OS 2.0 / digital out problem

For some reson I always thought that you couldn't slave a clock using it's
digital out connection to another device, the clock is just a digital packet
transmitted as part of the normal one way communications. This means the XL7
has to be the master, since it has no digital in or word clock in. So what I am
getting at is after looking at your configuration, I'm thinking you should realy
just used balanced analog into one of your mixers, and use the mixtreme as the
clock master. There are a few potential things you could do, but trust me it's
not worth it. The real problem is that your digital inputs on your TMD's don't
have an independant clock sync / converter. Not a lot you can do about that and
besides a balanced connection will sound just fine.

Andre,
Thanks for the reply. I was using my PC soundcard (Soundscape
Mixtreme) as clock source for both TMD-1000s via TDIF. One TMD-1000
is set to SPDIF digital input for the channels used by the XL7.
I tried changing the TMD-1000 so that clock source is coming from the
digital in from the XL7 and then set the Mixtreme so that it was
receiving it's input from the TMD1000 via TDIF. I connected both
mixers together with SPDIF and set one to slave clock from the other
(normally I have both slaved to the mixtreme via TDIF). This setup
caused lots of problems. I got lots of digital input errors on both
mixers and when I record in Cubase I get nothing but noise. Is there
any way to set the XL7 so that it syncs to SPDIF clock? Maybe I
should just forget this whole mess and go with analog inputs!!!

I'm running OS 2.0 through the SPDIF output and haven't (so far) had
any problems.

The XL-7 will automatically sync to any SPDIF once there is a proper cable
connected and a clock signal present. For what it's worth, I too get the
occasional pop and click in my digital recordings from the XL-7, and
everything is set up properly in my studio too. I always have to take it
into Wavelab and draw them out. I think the XX-7's have a relatively weak
digital signal, and this is what's causing the pops.

Someone once sent me a way to boost the digital output (though this is in
violation of FCC rules), sadly I cannot find it anymore!! If you're on
this list, could you please repost that information?

Is there any way to set the XL7 so that it syncs to SPDIF clock? Maybe I
should just forget this whole mess and go with analog inputs!!!

I have a TM-D1000 as well, and it's terrible at syncing to S/PDIF. It
gives me the "Clock Error! Fs -> Internal" message all the time. I
have it slaved to a Roland S/PDIF out. It's so bad for me that I leave
the mixer showing the clock selection page all the time so I can hit
Enter quick to restore sync to Digital In A.

In your case, you should have the following setup:

Mixer A: XL-7 connected to Digital In A. Clock source: Digital In A.

Mixer A: RCA cable connected from Word Clock out to...
Mixer B: ...Work Clock in. Clock source: Word Clock in

Soundscape: Clock source: T/DIF In

Make sure you try different cables for the S/PDIF routing. They always
say use very high-quality shielded RCA cables, but sometimes crappy
ones have worked better for me. Try a bunch, and see which works best.

I'm sure rEalm meant that something ELSE will automatically sync to the
XL-7 once a cable is connected, as the XL-7 cannot slave to external
clock.

There's some capacitor that you could remove, but I don't know what it
is, and it would CERTAINLY violate FCC! =)

Re: OS 2.0 / digital out problem

2003-04-15 by Justin Grimley

Aaron,
I now have the setup you detailed below. However, I have also
discovered what was causing the problems and it has nothing to do
with the XL7, but is potentially very worrying.

The exact error I am getting on my mixer is:

Error!
Data Error D in A

... not the Clock Error (which I get all the time when I reset my PC
etc). I discovered that when I turn on the lamp beside my desk
(which I just installed so I could read the 2.0 manual addendum
while playing with OS2.0) and raise the dimmer control I get the
error above!!! Could this be because I am overloading my power
sockets?? I have also noticed that if I get a static shock from any
of my gear I sometimes get the error above too. Is this normally a
symptom of poor shielding, ground loop, too much drain on my power
outlets .... anyone have any ideas? I am living in an apartment and
there are only 2 power outlets near my work area. I have 5 surge
protector strips connected to these with quite a lot of gear. The
exact list is below.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
grimley.

PC and monitor
Mackie HR824 monitors
2 x Tascam TMD-1000 mixers
Behringer MX802A mixer
Steinberg Midex8
