Tips and tricks

Tips and tricks

2003-04-10 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

I'm bored and sick of work, so here's some tricks and tips, some of which
I may have posted before:

1. Random Presets. If you use the Randomize Preset command a lot (in the
Save menu), you can come up with some pretty cool sounds. However a lot
of times the Randomize function will assign sounds to ALL of the Presets
layers, and many times not all of them actually produce anything you can
hear (or it's too quiet when in the mix to matter). Use the Solo Layers
function in the Preset Edit menu to solo each layer one at a time. If you
solo one and don't hear anything, it's best to "deactivate" that layer by
selecting no sounds (the first sound #0000) in the Preset layer. That way
you save polyphony that would have otherwise been dedicated to a sound
that wasn't even audible!

2. Need phatter drums? Many of the drum sounds in the XX-7's only use one
layer. If you want to add more punch to your drums, go into the Save menu
and select the "Copy Preset Layer" screen. Use that to copy layer 1 to
layer 2, then do the same with the "Copy Preset Cords" cords function.
Save the Preset to a user location. For more variety, use the Trasnpose
screen in the Preset Edit menu to change the sound of the second layer,
this will help add more variety and/or texture to each hit. Note that
some of the "kit" presets may actually use all 4 layers, so you should use
the Solo Layers feature to see which of those can be safely overwrittern
with the Copy Layer command.

3. Still need phatter drums? If you use the Grid Record method to enter
your drum hits, the notes can be quite short. Use the Scale/Shift
Duration feature in the Pattern Edit menu to make the notes longer, which
can help add more sustain to the drum hits.

4. More human sounds. If you go into the Preset Edit menu, and then the
Patchcords screen, there's a simple way to make your songs sound more
human, and less robot like. Create the following patchcord:

KeyRand1(or KeyRand2) ---> AmpVel = X

Where X is the value that provides the best amount of randomization for
your needs (typically I use somewhere between 1 and 10). Now, each time
you press a key or the sequencer plays a recorded note, the velocity of
that note will be modified randomly. Works great on HH's!

Anyone else got any?

ya, here's some For nice stabbing riffs with lots of filter variation, turn off Velocity > Amplitude. Instead use velocity to modulate the filter, I personally use a piano-roll view window on a PC to then edit the 'velocity' info manually to get the precise rhythm or whatnot.

I'm also a big fan of clock modulation, they work great on LFO's, you can get a lot of really neat variations with different LFO vs. Clock modulation speed. Especially when it's routed to the filter. Another filter trick I like is using the 'hemi-quaver' waveform on an LFO the modulate the filters rhythm on notes that are held down.

Assigning a knob to drop the pitch and take the volume to zero is pretty cool too. It sounds nice during a solo to sort of have the melody 'fall' at a given spot. If you haven't already, try running yer sheit through an AIR FX. It sounds great. Route all 16 knobs to the filter of 16 channels, then use them to mix a track and have tons' of fun. (haven't actually tried this one out.)
route a controller to an effects send that has delay, throw it over select instruments or percussion parts during a track, sort of sounds like a 'dj' trick. Especially if you use it over a housebeat to create a double up efffect. boom boom boom boom. vs. boom-boom boom-boom boom-boom boom -boom. quarters to eights, or whatever you prefer, it souds nice. Turn up the rez on the hats, and play with the filter over all the percussion while the other hand controlls the delay on the kick = you can almost more or less do wicked techno style fills in real time on the fly. plus, it sounds really cool to filter beatz, it never gets old.Peace yo.

What is the status of E-mu providing detailed
sysex information to Emagic so we may finally
see an editor for the P2500 and all Command
Stations?

It seems Emagic would be willing to do this,
but they do not have what they need from E-mu.
(this is per the SD mailing list).

Is this the case?

Well, what kind of music do you make, what's your experience, etc? Telling
someone how to make patterns is not always an easy thing, that's like
telling someone how to paint a picture! Tell us a bit more about yourself
and what you're trying to do. Oh yeah, and welcome aboard!

This is how i do it.

Select pattern mode by hitting the "pattern" button
Scroll past the 1st 127 demo patterns until you get a blank pattern
(it will say untitled"
Select track 1
hit the "preset" button
select a sound you like
press record and play
record your music by playing the pads
stop

then move on to the next track and do the same thing
