XL-7 in Live P.A. setup

XL-7 in Live P.A. setup

2001-11-22 by audax@mb.sympatico.ca

I am considering purchasing the XL-7 to control the following gear in
a live setting:

Ensoniq ASRX Pro Sampler
Yamaha AN1x Synth
Korg MS2000 Synth
Yamaha DX100 Synth
Roland Juno 106

I want to import Midi files into the XL-7, assign the proper midi
channels to control 8 channels on the sampler, and one channel to
each of the synths. I want a seamless flow between tracks for dance
sets up to 2 hours in length. I wont be doing much tweaking on the
XL-7, just controlling the patterns and maybe adding some percussion.

Is the XL-7 what I am looking for?

Yes, I think you should get an XL7 and see how it works out. From
the description of your needs, it sounds like the XL7 will work
perfectly for you. One of the many things I like about the XL7 is
that is has less of an ego than other 'groove boxes' - it knows that
it's not the center of the world, so it actually has useful features
for interfacing with other devices. It's the best hardware sequencer
I have seen for controlling other synths in a live rig.

Bonus: The onboard sounds are so good that you might even find
yourself leaving one or more of your favorite synths at home.

I just tried the E-Loader software a couple days ago. I saved
sequences as Type 0 MIDI files from Cubase, and then dumped them to
the XL7 via MIDI dump. On a Macintosh, the program worked very
well. Sometimes the dumps didn't work without restarting the
program, but no major issues. It's really a breeze to use and I
think it substantially increases the value proposition for the XL7.
The new OS next week will allow dumps via the built-in USB port.
That should be more reliable, and much faster.

My advice is to get an XL7 and try it out for a couple weeks. If it
doesn't work for you, you can always return it.

Since you have all those synths, I would by an MPC-3000LE if I was
you.
I bought the RS7000 and I bought the XL-7 cause I can't afford the
space and the money to have all those beautifull synths you have.

For Live PA, I create my songs with the RS and the XL and then I put
samples into the SP_808EX and I use the SP to play my sections.
Then I mix songs among RS and SP then SP to XL and viceversa.

But since you have all that gear you probably won't need the internal
sounds.
Unless, yeah, you want to save the space.
MPC sequencer kicks XL and RS ass.

well I use the xl-7 as center for my liveact... using other synths:
access virusb
jomox xbase09
future retro 777
emu esi 32

and it works great....I am not a yamaha freak, cause I had the RM1x and sold
the box cause it was not that cool.... other option is the MPC3000... but
safe the money and buy additional a EMU ESI32 . and youve got also a good
sampler.... one big bonus of the XL-7 are the programmable knobs... real
great for synth which are controllable over midi.... or even for rebirth in
your PC.... maybe the mpc is a little bit constant in its timing.... but it
has also an easier engine... not as powerful as the xl-7....(ok... there are
still some bugs...but time will solve them..) and I like the stepsequencer
in da xl-7 for drum programming.... all over all: GET THE XL-7.... but
thats my opinion... you should go to the shop and test the boxes... some
like yamaha, some akai.. and other ( like johannes heil..) the roland
MC-80.... I had the Yamaha RM1x and the Roland MC-80.... and now the XL-7...
and its the best liveact center I have ever seen and used.... last weekend
in full action ....
also nice: teh lamp on the xl-7---- > good for bad club conditions....

I've used the MC303, RM1X, and MC505 in the past and they are
extremely poor for midi control. The XL-7 is looking pretty juicy.
Does anyone else have an opinion?

Thanks. I'll take your advice. It will be such a relief to get back
to live perfomances again.

Re: XL-7 in Live P.A. setup

I just cant justify buying an MPC as a sequencer though. Far too
pricy for what I would do with it. The sampler would go untouched (I
bought the ASRX Pro over an MPC because of the piss poor sampler and
high expense to upgrade).

More and more the XL-7 looks like the one to try out.

Besides... do they even make the 3000 anymore?
