Hey everyone, this group is pretty quiet. Is there another XL-7/MP-7 group where everyone is posting? I don't have a unit yet but am planning on getting one. Before I did, I was hoping to see what it was all about before getting one. I demoed it a little but I wanted to see what the impression was from people that was starting to dig deep into it. Rick

That would be maybe a good idea, if the list moderator would announce this list on E-MU site. :-) to get more people in, huuu?

First off, thanks Sean for getting back to me on the "arm pattern" thing. It is good to hear that there is a fix in the works. Do you know how long it might be before we see it? Oh ya, I don't wan't to be a pest but do you know if there is going to be some kind of list editer in the new os? OK back to the topic. "hey ive been lurking trying to learn about this badboy, didn't post 'cause i don't know much yet. I dropped by Mars today and had a chance to play around with mp7. the sound quality was great but I didn't know my way around it so could only audition the presets. "So, how are the other users here finding it?" I am loving it! Other than the "arm pattern" problem and the lack of a list editer or some other way to add program changes to my external gear. But I have faith in E-MU and they are working on it already so it is just a matter of time. This is the the best external sequencer i could buy for under $3000.00. the only way I think might beat it would be to run a at least two Doepfer schaltwerk's together, but that is not sompthing i have tried so i am speaking withought hands on expearience. (The main reason i say that is based mainly on the the fact that there is a button for evry function on that box and that is nice for live work). So why do i sey that, well i think the easiest way to put it is in point form so lets see...... 1. you don't have to use a computer OS 2. it has 2 midi outs with a total of 32 midi chanals 3. there is no cap on the sequencer 4. i couldent find another sequencer that would alow me to record on the fly (and yes i plan on using this in live work) 5. the keypads are volosity and aftertouch sensitive (dam why can't i spell?!) 6. unlike sompthing like a RM1x i can move through 896 patterns withought having to stop or have a glitch (new os pending) 7. 16 dedicated knobs to controll the synth, as well as a didacated glide (portamento) button. 8. the synth is massive 9. six outputs, four of witch can be used as FX send/returns(that is verry smart you guys at E-MU, thank you for thinking of that one!) 10. it is expandable 11. the thing is built like a tank, not like a MC-505 or RS7000 12. i can add 16 or 32 MB ram cards and burn my own samples using my E5000 sampler. (again, thank you guys at E-MU for another great idea! ill leave the mixer and the sampler at home when i play live now) well that is about it for my shamless loving of the box at hand. There are a few things that i wish where in there i will take this time to mention them, mainly becouse i have the time right now, love that weekend :) Mike's wish list 1. it would be great to be able to use the pattern quantize edit featuers on only selected tracks within a pattern 2. same thing with the volosity edit featuers 3. a list type editor 4. and no matter what i do or how much i beg it it just won't make me expresso when i wake up :P " Is anyone planning on using the record button in a live situation? I've been thinking about this - laying down basslines and melodies from my ztar, and having them loop. Would that be cool? Hmm, looks like it's going to be another late night :> Let see how it goes. ----- > Ric" please let me know how it went, i am curious how you are finding it. well that's it for me today peace ya all

All of the edit functions affect only the unmuted tracks. Simply select the track(s) you'd like to quantize/velocity scale/transpose/etc and perform the action. The muted tracks will be unaffected. > 3. a list type editor That's high on my list of things I want to do... > 4. and no matter what i do or how much i beg it it just won't make me > expresso when i wake up :P Now that'd be a damn nice feature! -Aaron

"First off, thanks Sean for getting back to me on the "arm pattern" > >thing. " >" Yes, it's really sweet to have the developers here, active, and providing help as well as listening to us." It shur is! i am totaly impressed with the levle of contact that i currently have with the E-MU people on this product i kinda can't belive it. It is a techies dream come true. > "> >1. you don't have to use a computer OS" > > > "> Interesting - personally, I would like to see >more< integration with external sequencers. I see the unit as a live extension of my studio, that I can take out to clubs." Well the only way i can put it is like this, i have had BAD luck with the PC and no better luck with MAC and the lack of dependability that i have encountered with them. It is just tooooooo much stress when i am coming close to a deadline, i have lost many months over the years due to HD falure and crashing OS's and dont want to deal with it any more. I am going to move my recording platform to sompthing other than the puter, I have been thinking about going to a darwin for this, i have only heard good things about them. But I have to wonder if i can still get the jazz drives disk's that i would need. > >" Is anyone planning on using the record button in a live situation? > >I've been thinking about this - laying down basslines and melodies > >from my ztar, and having them loop. The ztar and the xl-7 work really well together. Pretty much drum and bass in a box. You could keep a crowd entertained with nothing more. Wicked > "> The recording section isn't completely designed for such work but it does the trick, provided you know what you want to do before you start. I kept reaching for an 'undo' button, since not everything I play is worthy of being recorded, but couldn't find one. " the best way i know it to use the erase button wile in record mode just press it and hold down the note/notes that you want to erase and as the loop cycles the unwanted notes are erased. "> I also noticed something else - when two channels are pointed to the same drum kit, they are both affected by controller changes. Why is that? I had the "hybrid" kit on channels 2 and 5, and regardless of which of the two tracks was 'active,' twisting the quick edits - filter tweaks etc, affected drums playing from >both< tracks. (The tracks were set up to point only to their respective channels, rather than all)" this is becouse you are playing the same "instrament" what I do in that situation is just save multiples of the instrament that you want to do that with, for instance i will have up to 5 tr-808's saved as tr808-1 through tr808-5 and have one per channel/track so i can tweak out the snare seperatly from the hi hats, you get the idea. It is much more like having a real tr808/909. I would like to add sompthing here, i hvae to say that i have heard alot of copies of the 808/909 synths and this thing is the best i have heard, i own a TD-5 drum head from roland that has a 808 in it and was using it just becouse i always found it cut through way more than samples off the E5000 but i took the time to compair the two as well as listening to recordings of trax that i know have been made with a 909 they are so dam close that i can not see the justification for the expence of going out and buying either. expescialy a 808 (most of my trax use this sound set) due to the lack of midi implamentasion on board. the bass drums are identical no difference that i could hear over a mackie and a pair of beyer dynamic 911 headphones, none at all! thank you E-MU. *Phew* that was a rant. well hope i dident make any 808/909 owners angry there it is not my intension i was just totaly surprised and impresed. take care Mike

As an owner of an MC505, an RM1X, MC80ex, MMT-8, MSQ-100, QY70 and Cakewalk, I've been looking for a sequencer I can use live. This might be it. More tracks than the 505, deeper synth editing than the RM1X, more real-time control than the MC80, faster to work with than the MMT-8, more note capacity than the MSQ, more outs than the QY70 and more portable than Cakewalk. 1. Latching the arpeggiator -- would have been great to have a dedicated button to latch the arp. I keep the arp latched and when I want to stop it, I go to the main preset screen, move the cursor to the arp parameter and use the data knob to switch the arp off. Not the most graceful real-time solution. Of course, I could unlatch the arp by playing the arpeggiated notes again, but I don't always remember which notes I'm arpeggiating. 2. Receive/transmit more CC#'s to edit NRPNs -- would be nice to use CC#'s 98 and 99 to control my Electribe drum machine (I can hear the chorus now: Why do you need the ER-1 when you've got the XL-7???!!!). 3. Send program changes -- This has been asked for by another user, but I've got one more thing to add: "me too." 4. Editing via an events list -- also posted by another user, but "me too." 5. Local off -- also posted by another user, but "yeah, what he said." That's all I can think of for now. The more I use XL-7, the more I love it. Patch cords are an unexpected bonus. Pads that send aftertouch, for goodness' sake: Who would have thought of that? And being able to slip into and out of grid mode while the sequence is running sometimes makes me wet my pants. But I guess that's the price of joy. Well, I'm off to sell all my other sequencers now and buy an E5000 sampler so I can burn my own presets.

We had your use scenario in mind when we added the trigger feature. There are 16 triggers. They can be different notes, and MIDI channels with latching capabilities. The LED will tell you if its latched. If you need to play a cord, use several buttons. Each Trigger set up is stored with in a multi setup. You have 63. > 2.
