I can't seem to figure out how the rates behave after attack1? i have 
the envelope set to tempo-based and after setting attack1 the rates 
do not behave accordingly to what you set it to? does anyone have 
success using the volume envelopes? any help appreciated..

Yes I know exactly what you mean.  I believe it's just that there are so many parameters, all of which can interact in such a way as to sorta do the same thing.  
Like for instance, the Filter envelope might be causing it to sound as though the volume is shaped a certain way.  Emu suggests routing env -> pitch to really hear what it's doing.   A graphical approach is way easier.  
One other thing you might try is look into the patchcords and see what the amounts are set to.
Oh yeah, make sure you're not hearing multiple layers, but only editing one of them.
