ROM Preferences?

ROM Preferences?

2003-02-18 by Evan Riley

Well, I have finally decided to take the plunge and buy myself an XL-7. As I do not have unlimited resources, I will be forced to choose one or maybe two roms to purchase along with the unit. I generally make darker sounding "dance" music, from electro, to drum n bass, to downtempo ambient style stuff, whatever catches my fancy really. My question is, really, what of the expansion ROMS are your favorites, and why? Which would you recommend for me and why? All the sudden this sounds like some sort of essay question for an entrance exam!

Thanks,

This question gets asked all the time, and I would have to say you should get
the unit then listen to the sounds it has before you buy another rom, I think
you will find that you can make it do all sorts of crazy stuff as is and you can
always pick up the rom later after you work out what you have versus what you
nees that's missing. You'll find it pretty inspiring as is...

Just a thought,
Andre

I like the P2000 Rom a lot, mainly because it fills in the gaps in the
XL-7's ROM. Lots of more normal instruments, but you'll be surprised at
homw much you miss them..

No, the P2000 Rom, otherwise known as the Proteus Rom or Pop Rom. It has
a lot of the instrument types you won't infd on the XL-7 Rom, like guitars
and pianos. Even if you don't use those types of instruments per se, it's
still nice to have their base waveforms on hand for making your own
sounds.

Nothing, that little Rom gets refered to by more names than it should :)
It's all the same thing.

Not totally true. There are several versions of the "Composer" ROM.

In the Proteus 2000 & 1000, there is a CMPSR ROM with 8 banks of
presets geared towards the front panel layout of the 1U modules (i.e.
12 knobs).

The Proteus 2500 originally shipped with a "P2500" ROM which had 4
banks of presets tailored to the 16 knob layout of the P2500. This was
later replaced by the updated "P-ROM" (for Pop Rom, I think, or maybe
Proteus ROM). This ROM has 5 banks of presets, the extra bank being
primarily beats, as these were added in later.

The PK-6 comes with the same "P-ROM" as the newer P2500s. In fact, the
Pop ROM was created for the PK-6, and was added to the P2500 since it
was strictly additional presets.

Having said all that, all 3 ROMs have the same samples and instruments,
just different presets (however, the ROMs do sound very different).

PS. did that make anyone's head spin?

I bought the p2500 rom and i was delused because i've got a motif and
all the acoustic waves are so much better!!it sounds so much like a 5
years old synth!so be careful because if you already have a machine
with a standard sound palette,maybe it's not a good deal!if you don't
have,it's more interestting!
I sold the p2500 to buy the new vintage pro rom! What a good surprise!
It's a very good adition to program new fat sound with the xl7!and
the presets are very....big!!
I've got the pure phatt rom,to complete my sound palette especially
for hiphop-rnbe drums...
For the last rom,i will buy maybe the world expedition, for another
type of sound
With this config,my Xl7 give me some type of sounds i can't have with
my motif to complete it!
And with the powerful programming synthesis in the box, with all these
diverse waveforms, creating original sounds is a dream!!

That's my favorite.

(To my XL-7, I added the Pure Phatt, the World Ex and the "Sounds of the
ZR" (for its piano and GM). I had bought a Sie-whooziski orchestra one,
but that one didn't work.)

Nope. Try using more arpeggiation and patch a controller to a phaser.

The ROM you are speaking of is called the "Proteus POP Collection". Its
part number is 9140. It should be listed on our web site with the rest
of the ROMs available for you Command Station.

Any way of getting the Composer presets into the user prests like you
guys did with the xl-1 and mp-1 presets?
