Horrible Noise!!!

Horrible Noise!!!

2003-01-10 by tj297 <tj297@yahoo.com>

I just got another MP-7 (i returned the last one) and there is this awful noise
coming from every output. it's not typical analog humming or buzzing but
rather a nasty digital scrape that happens like every 2 seconds. it has the very
first OS in it. is this a known problem with OS 1.0? i can't see how an OS
upgrade would fix a problem that sounds like a short on the processor. i think
i'll just return it and get my money back. anyone heard of this before? it's a
shame there is no archive here to look things up.

That sounds awful. It is possible that you got another lemon. I would
first call Emu support to bring up the issue (831.438.1921 8 am to 5 pm
Pacific Standard Time ) and if they can't solve the problem, return it to
your dealer and get yet another one. I'm sure you anxious to use this
machine. I've had my MP-7 for about a year now and it's awesome. Let us
know how it goes. And sorry to hear about your problems...

I have the same problems and thought it was just the digital out (since that
was the only one I used). I hooked it up to my AV receiver and it was clean.
I think it was my sound card. I haven't tried the analog outs, bet your ass I
will now. I also have another Sound card coming in todays as the old one
needed service anyway. Hopefully (fingers crossed) It was the sound card and
not some strange anomoly I have to try and track down.

aw man, digital outs? No wonder, it is definately your sound card not taking the data in right. wrong sample rate, bad clock, a ton of issues possibly. Definately try the analog outs and a and b with other digital ins.

Re: [xl7] Horrible Noise!!!

I tried all the sample rates. I'm definitely going to try the analog outs. I
honestly think the card needs to be serviced. Like Isaid I went digital into
my AV receiver, and it was perfect. Went digital into the AV receiver with a
cd player with digital outs as well. Both Crystal Clear. I'm hoping the new
card which arrives today will fix the issue. I really want to record in the
pc going digital rather then routing the signal through the outboard mixer
analog then back into the computer. Wish me luck. I just got the unit 2 days
ago. Don't know the first thing about it other than updating the os, and
pressing play to play the preset patters. So any info is greatly appreciated.
I bought it mainly for sequencing, as I also own a Mo'phatt, a Vintage Keys
Plus, and a JV1080. I run Sonar for everything, but there's nothing like grid
recording for drums. (which I need to learn how to do w the MP7)

Did you make sure that the soundcard was locked ot the MP7?

You cant just set it to the same rate, it needs to be "locked".
There should be a setting for external or internal clock source, set
it to external so it uses the MP7 clock.

I locked the card at 48khz to no avail. In fact I locked the card at all the
sample rates it handles up to 96khz, to no avail

What you say doesn't make sense. You can't "lock" at all the rates
when slaved. You need to "lock" it to the MP7/XL7, which will then
give you the rate automatically. I'm not sure if the xx7's are 44.1
or 48 but you must have the card locked to the xx7's incoming clock
so don't even bother setting the card to one of the available rates.
Just setting the soundcard to the same rate as the xx7 won't be good
enough. It has to be SLAVED to the xx7.

Let me try to explain this again. I locked my Gina24 at each sample rate
available and still haven't gotten better results than a bunch of digital
noise. I have slaved my sound card per instructions of it's manual unless I'm
missing something other than selecting spdif rca. So as you can see in
essence it does make sense, perfect sense in fact. I've spoken with the tech
guy that I bought the machine from and he (allegedly) spoke with the people
at EMU, and come to find out that the clock is too fast for some devices, or
just isn't compatible. The next step is us calling Echo Monday. I'm under the
belief that they just aren't compatible. My DAT (DA30 MKII) works flawlessly
(without locking any sample rates) as well as my CD player w (digital inputs)
to my sound card. I hooked the MP7 up to my AV receiver and it worked
flawlessly. The same with my Cd player. So you got me. I'm thrown for a huge
ass loop. They both work, but won't work together. The analog outs are quiet
though........

How can you lock your Gina at multiple samples rates while slaved to
the MP7? Its impossible. When you slave the Gina to the MP7 the
Gina will show whatever the MP7 gives it. So there is no way you
could be trying different rates will slaved, it just doesnt work that
way.
If you have gotten the MP7 to work with other units and not slaved
either side then you will get little pops here and there, probably a
lot more subtle than what you are hearing now. But no two clocks are
exactly the same, even if they are both at 44.1k, the will go
slightly off and thats what you need to have one slaved to the other
so they can be exactly the same (except for errors caused by jitter).
Perhaps your DAT autoslaves when recording from a digital source and
that's what you havent noticed them there.

Sounds like there *is* some compatiblity problem here. I used to get
that when I connected my DAT to an old hardware DAW sometimes. There
was a setting I had to engage, but I can't remember now.

Hopefully Echo can clear up the problem. You will need to figure out
how to slave it properly though for best results once they figure out
the cause for the noise.

Yeah, you need to set the sound card to use the sample rate clock set by
the XL-7. Typically called something like "external SPDIF" or similar.

Well, it sounds like you ARE doing it right, though do you have the latest
drivers? I use a Echo Layla24, and it locks to the XL-7's digital signal
with barely any issues (occasional pop, but I can draw those out).

I think I have the same problem too with my MP-7. It only happens when it
comes up from a cold start. I traced the noise down to the power supply.
Don't know why it's doin it, but it send Midi pulses and makes unwanted notes
when you least expect it. I sent word to Emu but I haven't got a reply yet.
Anyone know how to solve this problem? Should I order another power supply?

Re: [xl7] Horrible Noise!!!

2003-01-14 by OutLaw1387@aol.com

Ladies and Gentlemen I am proud yet said to announce that their is some strange anomoly(quoted by EMU Tech) between the MP7 (and I imagine the XL7) and Echo's GINA24 when connecting digitally. Both EMu and Echo are at their witts end in combatting the issue. EMU has logged it as a possible bug, and I'm not sure Echo is going to put it down as anything. So rest assured it isn't the sound card, the settings, or some over sight. Every possible scenario I performed between the units, a Dat machine, an A/V receiver. They will work with everything else but together. Oh I also tried with another GINA24 card to no avail. I'm happy to put this thing to bed and I will be going out analog, then routing the signal into the GINA24.

Thank you for all your help.

Now if anyone can tell me how do I create patterns in grid mode I'd be greatly appreciated. ( I really need to read the manual) LOL!!

I noticed the weird midi notes too occasionally when I first power up. I
also still have the problem where the Preset on Ch. 1 will show that it's
a got an asterisk next to it, and the Save button blinks, even though the
unit was just powered on and nothing's been touched. Anyone else seeing
this?
