Repeat Button

Repeat Button

2003-01-06 by David DeciBel

I'm trying to insert a patter in the middle of my song. What I'm doing is
this:

Putting my cursor under the step (this case it's step 6) - and then holding
down REPEAT and pressing enter at the same time. It takes me to the NEXT
step, but doesn't insert...

Any ideas?

You sure its not inserting? I think it does go to the
next step but at the same time there should be a new entry.
I know when I first tried this it looked like it didnt work
but when I checked it everything was fine.

I'm sure. I'm on STEP edit mode in the song. I'm doing everything in the
REVISION D manual. I have the latest os (v 1.32)

Thanks...

Ok I see what you mean, I am having the same problem myself.
I know it just worked for me in the last song I did and that
was with 1.32 so I'm not sure what's going on.

Performing the steps you mentioned will do nothing (but you already
knew that...) I thought the manual was correct on this, wait, nope,
just checked and it's wrong (at least my version is, maybe later revs
are right). Think of the repeat button as a "split" button. It will
only divide an existing step into two steps at the bar you are
currently at. This was originally because I thought most people would
have linear song tracks that they wouldn't want sliding around. I've
since changed my mind (well, let's say my mind was changed...) so this
might be one of those things that work better in 2.0 (hint, hint).

For now, to split a song step, go to a bar somewhere in the middle of a
step and hit repeat, optionally change the pattern, then hit enter.
For example, if pattern step 1 is 16 bars long, go to bar 9 and press
repeat. Pattern step 1 will now be 8 bars long, and you'll have a new
8-bar step 2 at bar 9. The old pattern step 2 will remain at bar 17,
but will be renumbered to step 3.

If you want to do the normal idea of repeat (yeah, I know, smack me) go
to the step after which you want to insert, change its length to
include the length of the pattern you want to insert (this slides the
song data down!) then go to the bar that you want the new step at and
press repeat.

This "split" behavior will still exist in 2.0, but additionally, if you
"repeat" while at a step beginning, it will do the normal thing (i.e.
slide down the song data and insert a new step of length equal to the
length of the current step).

Ok now you just opened a can of worms. . . My current song is about 10 or
11 "patterns" long. I went to pattern 5, and split the pattern in the
middle, and yes it created two 8 measure long tracks. Then I change the
length to 16 on both. Here's the wierd part. I go pack to step #1 and
heres what it says:

s01 STEP LN:-- Bar:001
030^0 Untitled

the LN is zero???

when i hit stop and play it says CURRENT PATTERN: 030 NEXT: STOP and plays
for 3 seconds and stop. My song is totally ****ed. When I "revert" the
song, everything is back and is fine.

Is it too much to ask just to put a step in my song?

Thanks.

Try changing the length to 32 before splitting just for kicks. Maybe
that will make it happier.

Whatever you do, don't save over your working copy of the song. If you
want, you can save to a different song location and upload it to a
computer. That way you could either email it to me so I could see what
the hell's going on, or you could open it in a software sequencer and
take a look at the controlling text events.

Apparently! =( Sorry you're having trouble. Unfortunately, song mode
kinda got the short end of the development time stick...

Re: [xl7] Repeat Button

2003-01-09 by Aaron Eppolito

For those who weren't privy to David and my conversation, here's a
little bit of advice for song mode step edit. The bottom line is:
"Make sure you insert a STOP step before saving and/or repeating."
Also, if you think about repeat and erase as simply inserting or
erasing pattern change EVENTS (see the text event below; this is what
gets placed in the song track), rather than inserting or removing
patterns, all might be a lot clearer.

Well, it looks like all is fixed. I put a stop step at the end of the
song and i think that enabled me to change lengths. I did start from
scratch on a different song number, and had some shortfalls with that
too... Especially when erasing steps. For some reason, when i erased
step one, it put step 2 to step 1 but made it 32 mearsures. Go
figure. Either way, it's fixed. Thanks a lot...

erm.....

Is it just me, has the repeat button stopped working
under 0s2, in the event list editor?
In order to duplicate events.

bummer

Uh oh! It does say in the manual that the Repeat function won't work in

this?

" Repeat button - - - - Duplicates the currently selected event,
allowing
you to edit and create a new event.
1) Press Repeat.
2) Change the time, channel, or MIDI event type."

copied and pasted from mp7 manual on Emu web site.
Which manual are you using?

Hopefully i'm missing something obvious, but i'm sure
it just kind of worked before. Is the cursor placement

I know how it used to work, I used it extensively in my XX-7 Contest tune
in fact. We're worried that it might not function this way in the new OS
now though, and I'm at work and can't check this out at the moment. I was

Soz, I didn't mean to sound so harsh!
Is this the os2 addendum that u referred to?

"In
addition, any screen or mode that overrides the repeat button such as
list
edit precludes using realtime repeat."

I think I may be getting confused :)
I just tested it again and it seems to be working!
I was expecting it to auto-increment to the next time position.
At the moment it places the repeated event on the same time position,
which can be confusing\0/

Is this how it used to work?
I'd best just shut up now LOL

liked your tune btw :)

It will work without notes in the track too, empty tracks, etc. Just make
sure you set the right note value using the Quantize field of the Record
ready screen. Oh yeah, and then turn off Record, I always forget that

One last question, since 0S 2.0 the repeat button works in playmode, but
just if there are notes in the
