First of all welcome aboard!

I hear you man, I was the same way with SX and the PC, I needed a break
from doing the computer thing all the time, and the XL-7 definitely gave
me a breath of fresh air. Is the timing tight? I think so, though I'm
sure Nick will disagree. He's going to be doing some tests soon I
believe, so that may clear things up. For my purposes (live and studio)
it's been more than tight enough. Do the sounds get old? Hard to answer
this one as I program my own. If you get sick of them though, there's
tons of sound roms out there you can install to get some new sounds to pay
with. Yes, you can use a E5000 Ultra to burn samples to flash rom.

I'm seriously considering purchasing an mp-7 because i need a
break from composing and working completely on the computer.
i use a Mac with Logic, Reason and Ableton Live and all the
technology is getting in the way of my music. so it's time for a
new toy. the mp-7 looks and sounds dope and i''ve used e-mu
stuff in the past and feel very comfortable working with it. my
favorite piece of gear ever was my Ensoniq ASRX Pro(wish i
hadn't sold it) because of the awesome sound quality.
unfortunately the sequencer SUCKED and it was very buggy.
anyway, i guess my question is: Is the sequencer on the mp-7
very tight? i'll be producing hip-hop and mellow d&b and
tightness is of the essence. i'm worried because i know e-mu
isn't exactly known for making sequencers. and is everybody
happy with the sounds or are they getting old? oh, and can i load
my own sounds in with the expansion flash rom with an e5000
Ultra or do i need an E4 sampler? it says 2 different things on
e-mus site. thanks and i hope to be playing a new mp-7 soon.

Realm - How often do you rewrite your flash ROM?
I am looking at investing in a sampler sometime next
year. Just haven't narrowed it down to which one. Have
you had any problems with burning files to the ROM?
Invalid formats? Unexplainable errors?

Thanks,

At this stage I am unconvinced that the XL/MP is tight, so what I
really want to do is quantify things (especially since E-mu are still
working on software releases; if there are timing issues it would be
wonderful to get them addressed).

This is an important answer. The XL/MP is a sophisticated synthesiser
rather than a simple analogue-modelled beat box, and well worth
experimenting with. The programming interface isn't perfect, but it's
pretty good compared to some of the boxes out there.
