Questions (emu techs, who ever..)

Questions (emu techs, who ever..)

2002-11-14 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

A couple questions for the Emu techs:

- Can you let us know exactly what parameters are being affected by the
Randomize Preset function? I know that none of the pitch settings seem to
be changed, what other one's don't get randomized? Will randomize assign
waveforms from more than one ROM?

- Sometimes when you're in Song Mode, it's neccesary to jump back to
Pattern mode to do a quick edit to the currently playing Pattern (at that
step in the song). Easy enough. However, sometimes when you go back to
Song Mode, the current pattern for that step will loop once, instead of
switching to the next pattern when it's done playing (ie, the next one
assigned to the following Song Step). Is this normal, or a bug?

- Weirdness. Scrolling in the Event List Editor, and you are holding down
ENTER while the cursor is under the value for the controller you're trying
to edit. Obviously this lets you keep the cursor in the field where you
want it, so that you can change values for multiple events without having
to keep pressing the left/right keys to get to that field. However,
everytime you do this and you pass a different controller type, the cursor
jumps back to the first field, and does not the remain where you want it.
IE, I'm trying to lower all CC#7 values recorded in a pattern by a few
numbers. So I place the cursor under the field for the first CC#7 amount
value, change the number, then hold down Enter and scroll to get to the
next CC#7 value. So far so good. However, if while scrolling I pass say
a Pitchbend event, the cursor now automatically moves back to the very
first field in the Event List Screen. Bug or intentional?

Dunno. I'll take a look later. For now, you can just assume it's
magic... =)

It's normal. Tha pattern plays till the end, loops to the beginning,
picking up the song at the beginning of the switched out pattern. For
example, if your song has Pattern A at bar 1, B at 5 and C at 9, ending
at 13, if you switch into pattern mode at bar 7, pattern B will loop
indefinitely. When you switch back to song mode, pattern B will play
till its loop point, then the song will pick up at BAR 5 (not 9). This
is intentional. If you had linear song track notes, it's presumed that
you wouldn't want them skipped, so it ensures that they get played.

Neither. =) The way that screen works, the pitchbend value field is a
different one from the controller value field (pitchbend is signed
14-bit, controllers are unsigned 7-bit). The one that's not applicable
is hidden. Therefore, when you scoll through a pitchbend event, the
controller value field no longer exists, and as such, your cursor can't
be on it. Kinda unfortunate, but that's just the way this one works.

Well, I just checked, and since it's pretty cool, I probably shouldn't
tell you. I can tell you though, every parameter does get randomized,
but there have to be constraints because without them, 99% of purely
randomized presets don't even make any sound!

> Can you magically make the new OS get here sooner then? :)

Well, I am working full time on it, so while it's not magically, it is
something that I have *some* control over... <bribes accepted> =)

Ummm, must've lost my hat.

Yeah. You do. Did you see South Park last night?

Xavier,

There is a freeware utility called Midi-Ox at http://www.midiox.com
which is primarily used for sysex transfers but has a playback
utility in it called Midibar. I have used it since "99"
Download the latest free version, and once you open that program
(midiox), you will see what looks like a little red fish (it's
actually the letters m & b)in the task bar.
Click on it to open up the midibar utility, click on the folder icon
and select the midi file that you want and click the "play" arrow.

Later,

M2
