I am seriously considering the purchase of the MP-7. My only problem is I don't fully understand if this is the machine for me. I am interested in creating my own hip-hop/R&B beats coupled with basslines and melodies. I want it so that all I need to do is add vocals and have a complete song. Is this the machine for me?

Totally a all in one machine. I got a XL7 just for that purpose. Granted my vocals aren't that great anymore. I use it a lot to fill in the synth and drum positions for live performance. So, I just play either bass, electric guitar, or tweak knobs. My usage is within Gothic Metal and Industrial rock genres. -greg --- papichulo1172 <puli6912@...> wrote: > I am seriously considering the purchase of the MP-7. > My only problem > is I don't fully understand if this is the machine > for me. > > I am interested in creating my own hip-hop/R&B beats > coupled with > basslines and melodies. Thank you for replying so quickly! When I tried out the MP-7 command station in Guitar Center, I played with it for a couple of hours. The other main concern I had is that although it had a lot of really great sounds, it seemed to lack a strong selection of percussion sounds. I am concerned that I will have to get a stand-alone drum machine to supplement this. --- In xl7@y..., Greg Oler <golerage@y...> wrote:

Yes this is the machine for you, with many possibilities. I do hiphop myself to. Have the MP-7 with the proteus rom added (soundrom) [Spoelstra, P.J.] pfieu great stuff. I searched everywhere for the best machine for making hiphop and found this to be the best (MPC is great to, but I didnt want to look al over for sounds, or create m one sounds) What you do need extra is some midi-keyboard, otherwise you'll go crazy. (Maybe stupid that I say, but you cannot record vocals in this machine, you'll need to do that in PC or HD-recorder) [Spoelstra, P.J.] good luck To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to: xl7-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com Your use of Yahoo! I feel it has strong set of drum sounds. The bass drums are a little light as far getting a really deep thump. But it can be achieved. In fact recently there were a lot discussions in this group about how to get great drum sounds. I tried mine at a Guitar Center as well and its volume never was loud enough. They had it patch into a set of passive monitors. If you can listen to the soundsets inside headphones the next time you visit G.C., it would help you decide if the sounds are to your liking. I got my XL7 when they offered the free expansion ROM, so I have more options than the standard box now. I am thinking as a Christmas gift to myself, to get even more ROM. -greg --- papichulo1172 <puli6912@...> wrote: > Thank you for replying so quickly! > > When I tried out the MP-7 command station in Guitar > Center, I played > with it for a couple of hours. Don't forget: You can add up to three times as many sounds/presets as came with the box. I love the percussion sounds of the "World Expedition" ROM. >Thank you for replying so quickly! > >When I tried out the MP-7 command station in Guitar Center, I played >with it for a couple of hours. You might want to wait a bit and compare with the MC-909 which is coming out soon. It has a sampler and has some mastering facilities. In theory you could bang out your own beats, sample some beats, sequence them and if even fly a vocal overtop of the final mix, mix in the beast, with some mastering compression and record out. I think. It is worth checking out. Ravi

I would have to agree that for certain instances it does not have great percussion sounds. But the great thing is about the MP7 is that you can make your own new sounds. ----- Original Message -----

I'm sure that the 909 won't live to it's hype. But I have a strong bias against "fisher price" I mean 'roland' grooveboxes. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ravi Ivan Sharma" <noision1@...> To: <xl7@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 12, 2002 7:49 PM Subject: Re: [xl7] Uses of the MP-7 > You might want to wait a bit and compare with the MC-909 which is coming out soon. The D2? That peace is pretty cool for what it is. But it's more marketting hype to me than actual functionality, which is what the EMU is to me. I've played with the D2 quite a bit and it is fun. Don't get me wrong, the 909 might be a cool piece. But from what I've seen with roland, they'll probably put the same guts from the 505 in a different interface... Sampling will be nice too, but 64 voice polyphany? Worries me... ----- Original Message ----- From: "gongvibe" <edmann@...> To: <xl7@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 12, 2002 9:00 PM Subject: [xl7] Re: Uses of the MP-7 > >>why? You really like to try to cut me down. And I think it's hilarious... I prefer many Roland products, however the grooveboxes are not real great, once again (this may be hard for you to understand), in my opinion. I love their synths, but again, every product has the same damn xv/jv chip in it with those damn annoying "jazz scat" presets. I am good friends with a Roland rep, and I think they are a GREAT company that backs up their products VERY well. But I also think there are a lot of better things to get than the Roland MC-505. We'll see in the near future if 909 is worth the 1500 bones it's going to cost you... I PERSONALLY (this statement may not apply to you, Ravi) would not be able to dedicate my music to a machine that has 64 voice polyphony. Maybe that's fine for House, and all that stuff, but my music requires a few more voices -- now don't start thinking I am trying to diss house music, because I love it! ;) I will be attending a clinic for the 909 actually in about a week. I'm quite interested to see what it's about. But I am pretty positive that it's not something that I'm not already getting in my current setup. So just chill it, Ravi Ivan Sharma, and let everyone live humbly with their opinions... Be careful listening at Guitar Center, they usually give you really crappy speakers to listen to. When I was auditioning my XL-7, I was kinda unimpressed with the sounds myself. However a friend told me that wouldn't be the case when I heard it one good speaker. Sure enough when I got the unit home I was blown away by the sound quality. If nothing else, bring your own headphones to the store, I always do that. Saves your ears from listening to that 10 year old tweaking every single knob on a MS2000 right next to you too! :) rEalm When I tried out the MP-7 command station in Guitar Center, I played with it for a couple of hours. The other main concern I had is that although it had a lot of really great sounds, it seemed to lack a strong selection of percussion sounds. I am concerned that I will have to get a stand-alone drum machine to supplement this. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Especially as each stereo base waveform takes up 2 voices! A 4 tone patch would eat up 8 voices per note, icky! rEalm Sampling will be nice too, but 64 voice polyphany? Worries me... [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

If you don't need more knobs, the Roland (Edirol) PC-160A is cool. No aftertouch though. http://www.edirol.com/products/keyboard.html "Spoelstra, P.J." wrote: > Where can I find an inexpensive, small midi-keyboard to connect to > the MP-7?
