External equipment

External equipment

2002-11-12 by Greg

I am curious to know what kind of devices people are hooking up via
MIDI to their XX7 units. And if they thought it made their use and
experience with the XX7 unit better or worse. I am especially curious
to know what people think about pieces like the Oxygen keyboard and
Koas pads.

Thanks,
Greg

well, i use a access virus b and the xl7 for sequencing...
a jomox xbase09 and a future retro777 are workin in sync... cause the gear
has it\ufffds own sequencer...and a simmons mtx9 or sequential tom sequenced from
my xbase... this is the setup how I play live...
for effects I use only the internal effects of the xl-7 and the virus... the
virus has an ext in and so I can route soundz from my mixer in the virus...
via sent busses...

This is my setup.

First, a Fatar SL-880 MIDI keyboard routed to the XL-7 midi input.
The XL-7 itself is currently my sequencer (no computer involved) and
is expanded with the ZR, World and Beat Garden roms. The XL-7 also
controlls my Waldorf Microwave XTk (www.waldorf-music.com - you must
check out this synth if you havn't. It's really unique!). All
analogue outputs of the XTk and the XL-7 is routed to a Behringer
mixer so I can use an additional reverb and other effects. The XL-7
only has one reverb and that is not enough I think. I often need one
reverb with short or medium decay, and one reverb with looong decay.

I have an Alesis AIR fx, a toy which reviewers usually don't like
because it's quite lo-fi and bleh. I never use it in the studio, but
it's great for realtime performance. People love it.

The Behringer V-AMP 2 is my second effect processor. Yes, it's meant
to be used for guitars, but I find it quite useful for things like
drums, not to mention the e.piano. It's a bit lo-fi but I want it
exactly that way.

Well, that's what it is like here...

Re: [xl7] External equipment

Going into the XL-7 (MIDI In) is one of two things, a CS2x keyboard, or a
Red Sound Micro Sync. The CS2x is used occasionally as a controller
keyboard, for when I want to enter chords into the XL-7. Most of the time
though I prefer the rubber pads on the XL-7, I find them more responsive
than regular keys. The Red Sound is used when I play live and want to
sync my XL-7 to a turntable. It's pretty much only a midi clock source,
so it's not too exciting. It definitely helps me to get my live stuff
synced to an audio signal, but the routing required to hook it up to a DJ
mixer isn't always present, so it doesn't get used as much as I'd like.

Coming out of XL-7 (MIDI Out) is occasionally my Korg ER-1. I've been
using it some trying to integrate it into a live set I'm putting together.
Works fine synced to the XL-7, but I use it's own sequencer for all
things ER-1, so there's not much that can go wrong there. It's syncs up
fine though and is nice when I want to add some weird percussive elements
to my set (though the Xl-7 is definitely capable of some percussion
weirdness on it's own too).

I think the Oxygen controllers are great for the price. I've recommended
them to a few friends who needed a cheap way to enter notes in Reason and
what not. I think that the newer Roland (or are they Edirol?) controller
have more features though (knobs and sliders), and don't cost more. I'd
recommend those nowadays I think.

The Evolution line of controllers is also a good value with better features
for the money than the M-Audio models. More knobs and better
programmability, based on published info. I have used neither so this is
offered only as something else to investigate and not an endorsement.

And that looong decaying reverb would? AirFX? Just curious.

I also use an oxygen 8 controller going into the MP, and output to a
Novation A Station and to a KORG es-1. I also use a YAMAHA a4000 sampler
and of course the tecniques decks on the side!
