More new OS ideas

More new OS ideas

2002-11-08 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

1. Had an idea for a new OS feature after spending many, many hours in
List Edit mode this past week. It would be cool if the XX-7's had a way
to create CC curves/ramps. You would first specify the CC number for the
curve to be drawn, the pattern location and initial CC amount that the
ramp would start at. Then you would specify the ending pattern location
and final CC value for the ramp end. The number of events would be
determined based on the record quantize setting. Example:

You want to create a volume curve on a track that goes from 10 to 85 over
8 measures. So you would use the track select buttons to set the basic
channel to the track you want the controller curve on (#5). Then in
Pattern edit, you would go to the Curve screen and set the CC value to #7,
and the location the ramp should start at (say 001.01.000). You could
then specify that you want to the curve to start with a value of 10. Press
Enter to get to the next screen, which is where you set the ramp ending
point (ummm...008.04.383), and the ending value of 85. With the record
quantize set to 16th notes, you would now get a nice volume curve that
goes from 10 to 85 in 16th note intervals. This would save a lot of time.

2. And sort of along the same lines, it should be possible to quantize
previously recorded CC values, and not just notes. Thin Events kinda does
this, but not in a controlled fashion. BTW, the Thin Events example in
the manual is terrible, the value they use of three and the example can be
interpretted many ways...

CC curves are nice - I've been using them in Performer for, oooh, 15
years?

You'd need a curvature parameter as well, since different MIDI devices
interpret volume messages with different response curves.

another idea - A way to be able to see exactly WHAT pattern is playing in
song mode. maybe there is a way, but I have not seen it.

I kinda stopped doing that after my first run - in and it locked up. Ever
experience this?

Only with really intense sequences, lots of data and what not. I've been
using it lately a lot though, works fine and hasn't locked up on me yet.
