I just purchased an MP-7 and need assistance grasping the whole
  Effects setup.

I am wanting to beleive that I have the option to adjust the Effects A
& B's send level for each unique channel (like you do in MIX mode with
volume and Pan) but what I am finding is that I have to route each
channel to one of 4 predefined mix levels.

  Is this correct?

As an example Notator for the Atari had a method where by the "user"
grooves were basically any track on any pattern you wanted (usually the
last pattern, 99).

>>>A lot of programs still kinda do this, though maybe not 16 versions of
User Groove. Reason and Cubase come to mind. <<<

As it is now I have to import/export to and from Cubase. How do others
feel about this?

>>>That's what I used to do as well, although SX's lack of groove quantize
has put the stop to that now :( I personally would just rather have some
groove presets stored in the XX-7's for use. The ability to get User
Grooves would be cool, but unless you change the timing of all the notes
in the Track/Pattern manually (ungh!), how are you going to generate the
original groove? <<<

True, Cubase uses a .prt (part) to get the info from. I brough up
Notator though because it was a pattern based seq just like the xx-7's

You could create the grooves in another sequencer. I use Cubase 5
(not upgrading to SX since there is no midi groove control anymore).
And then when you get the feel right just send the midi file to the
xx-7 via eloader.

Either that or just save the .prt files in Cubase as .mid files and
import those. I did that already with a bunch of them so I could use
them as guides in the mp-7. But that means I need to go back and
forth between looking at those tracks (and noting their
timing/velocity data) and then manually adjusting the track I'm
working on.

As it is now I'll probably just load the DNA grooves in Cubase and
set it to 384 time and then look at the computer to see the
timing/velocity and adjust the mp-7 that way. Two screens would help
the process.

Kind of a pain but I was just reading about how M.A.R.R.S did pump up
the volume and they were step timing an sp12 at double tempo with no
quantize set so they could adjust the timing (it gave them 192's)
And then they seq the bassline on an MC500 but put the 8th notes on
one track and the rest of the notes on another track and ran those
notes only through an outboard delay unit set to a few milliseconds
and adjusted in order to get a swing. So even we have it pretty easy
now.

arps ; abbrev. APPREGIATION ,

succession of notes / chord played in a cyclclic manner
by selecting appregiation / arps and holding the notes down together (or using sustain (triplets work nice:)) or by sequencing single beats or single notes on separate channels multitimbrally in a drum like fashion.

Thanks James,
One more thing to all you XL users. I've seen the ad for the authoring ROM they have available but I know you have to have an E-MU sampler to create your own sound ROMs, as I read...But does anyone know a way around this. I'm a REASON user myself and I love my sounds on PC, is it possible to go about creating my own sound ROM that would be compatible without purchasing another E-MU product, unfortunately I don't own anything else yet.

NO other way to do it unfortunately. You may not have to buy a sampler
though, perhaps the store where you bought your XL-7 from will elt you use
one of theirs one day when they're not busy? I know my salesperson said
it would be no problem to do that (provided of course I bought the Sample
ROM from them).

That's all you really need though, the factory Presets can never be
overwritten, so they're always there. After you reinitialize the entire
unit, just load in the factory Patterns and Songs, and it should be
exactly as it came from the factory. The only difference, will be that in
new units the Factory Presets are duplicated in the User Preset section.
Your User Presets will be blank following the reinitialize, which is
really no big deal, who needs two copies of the same sounds? :P)

weird...

i can still download animations but not anthems...

wow...
really weird..

now it won't even let me DL animations...
30 seconds after it would let me.. interesting..

if it is a copyright thing they must have DL'd the zips and checked

It's really not that bad as long as you set things up the right way.

*Boot Mac in OS9
*Open OMS and assign correct Settings and Prefs
*Open Eloader - check for proper MIDI communication - XL<>Mac
*follow the sys update instructions.

I had trouble too at first - and for me the key was really learning
OMS and making the proper settings - once that was done everything
worked fine. I did have times after changing various settings in OMS
and Eloader when no matter what, nothing worked. I usually found that
shutting down and then powering up the entire system including the XL7
and the MIDI interface into the exact same setup eliminated the
problem and then everything worked as indicated.

I have updated the system 2X since then - and the Eloader/OMS setup
has worked great with no problems.

whether you use custom roms or not this machine is sweeeet!!

I had a 2500 breifly before i switched to xl7- and a huge reason i wanted these was to burn custom roms of my original samples which would save space and set-up for live performance.
found it cheaper and easier to trigger external sampler...but more set-up and room needed. :[
There are so many uses for this machine that not everyone buys for same reason. (if not happy with sounds learn and utilize patchcords, or even try stacking sounds)
since i gave up on custom roms I consider xl7 more of an extensive and stackable inst sample library with good wave forms(4 cards in mine).

Hey, Bob! Do you believe all the immature nonsense going on? I have been very polite and understanding; I try to maintain a positive outlook and try to do my best to help people solve problems/find work arounds with their gear, look up relevant previous discussions from the archives, etc. I have written privately to two of the verbal "combattants" with what I thought was amazing calmness and understanding. But it the nastiness seems to have spread to a third person (maybe more).

As I told you I am a believer of free speech and the thought of moderating people's posts really bothers me. And you shouldn't have to edit posts. I don't know what's gotten into people lately. We have never had this BS here!!!!

I also don't like the idea of booting people (except for spammers). If someone wants to leave, that is their choice.

Now that several people are on moderation, part of me wants to just take them off moderation and tell them to "Grow up." (Like I told my kids, I don't care who started it, both of you need to end it!) Yet, as long as its done, part of me wants to just leave it where it is. In any case, it is a waste of everyone's time. You shouldn't have to edit or even approve/reject thses posts.

My advice is just leave things the way they are--no more editing/approval/rejecting and certainly no more kind, understanding private e-mails to the "combattants." Let the posts just pile up no matter if they are inciteful or benign!!!!!!!

To echo what Greg said, thanks for trying to keep on top of it!!

I have been in this group and other similar ones (command station groups) since

This is because, command station has been increasing his popularity with

when people realize little by little its capabilities.

Besides there is people here with a good attitude to share their knowledge. I

the only way i can think of...

save the pattern in two locations, let's say "1" and "2". make sure
pattern 2 is saved with all tracks un-muted. do your thing while jamming
on pattern 1, then switch to pattern 2 and all tracks will come in
unmuted.

IIRC, from there you can:
a) switch back to pattern 1 and the track-mutes will be (i think?) as you
left them in pattern 1 before switching to pattern 2, or
b) switch back to pattern 1 using "mute hold" and have both patterns with
all tracks playing.

if anyone else has ideas on this...?

you can "erase" data from tracks, but that's a destructive editing
process. again, you might want to make a copy of the pattern and make this
type of edit to the copy.

one other thing i can think of.... if you're using software with the
command station you might be able to enable remote control.

Email addresses and passwords get compromised all the time. Look at sony. They recently got hacked for all their usernames and passwords. People just reuse the user names and passwords on various sites and then the hackers take advantage of that.

From the "(unknown)," I wonder if it's from a Hotmail account. I've gotten some of that from other Hotmailers, so I paid attention when I read this:

(Also, isn't it funny that when you display this message on the web, the list of messages "in this thread" goes back to 2002? I guess there's a LOT of Unknowns left in the universe.)

Yes. The spammer is a long time member, with a history of normal contributions. So I am inclined to believe it was a hijacked e-mail list and not intentioanl spam. Thanks for catching that. (I get the digest, so didn't see it until after it was deleted.)
