More Java stuff

More Java stuff

Scott,

Tried installing the newest version of Sun Java on the PC to see if that would help with the E-Loader issue, no luck though...

There are two problems - one is the installer not working, the other E-Loader
itself. You might try copy-installing E-Loader 1.1. Just copy the entire E-
Loader folder from the Program Files folder from a working installation and
put it on the XP+SP1 machine and see if that works at all. It just might. Note
you won't have the Shortcuts in your Startup menu, but you can just launch
the application by double-clicking the E-Loader application or possibly
ELoader.jar file in the install directory. Let me know.

Tried that initially too, not only won't it install, it won't run either.
I can install it in 'safe mode', but it doesn't do me much good. I can
send you a copy of the error log on Monday if that would help.

What error log? If E-Loader doesn't run at all, how can it generate an error
log? Or maybe you mean some kind of XP or Java error log?

Plus, what do you mean it installs when in safe mode? Are you saying the E-
Loader Installer works in safe mode, but not in full mode? That seems real
weird. I would think that the Java system installed with XP+SP1 either works
or it doesn't.

<a bit of technical stuff>
Note that the E-Loader installer may use the native (i.e. MS) Java - sort of a
bootstrap issue - since it has to have something to run on before it can install
anything else which it might eventually choose to use. But once installed,
either by the Installer or by a manual copy, E-Loader uses a private copy of
the Sun VM directly installed into the E-Loader install directory (currently
version 1.3.1). This was done to eliminate compatibility and support issues of
everyone potentially running a different VM. If E-Loader itself doesn't work
with XP+SP1 that implies that XP+SP1 doesn't work with the Sun VM 1.3.1,
which seems surprising, since I would expect that many other Java
applications on the PC platform would all of a sudden stop working in XP+
SP1, and you would think that there would be public notices of that on the
web, which I haven't seen.

I still haven't gotten an XP+SP1 system up and running yet, so I'm sorry that
we have to do this 'blindly'. Hopefully I will get a setup soon so that I can give
you more definitive answers. Meanwhile, I appreciate your willingness to do
some remote troubleshooting for me.

OK, now we have a slight problem...

I installed E-Loader 1.1 on machine with XP+SP1, and all worked fine!
The installer succeeded, and then E-Loader ran fine. Hmmm...

I don't really know where to go from here. I can't reproduce the
errors that you are seeing. Is there anything about your setup that
might be 'unusual'? If you could send me that error log it might shed
some light.

Uh oh! I'll have to get the error log to you next week Scott, I don't
have it here at work. No idea what could be causing this then, ungh! The
only thing I have that's different on my system from when it was working,
until it stopped working, was the installation of the SP1 update and my
Midiman 4x4. I'll play with it some more today when I get home though,
and thanks for at least trying to reproduce the situation on your end.
Sorry for the hassle.
