Another Newbie question -

2002-09-07 by reconehelmut

I recently bought an XL-7 to replace my MIDI controller and Peavey
PC-1600 on stage. I had no problems setting it up to work as a
controller (using multisetups) but I would like to use it as a sound
module too on some songs. I have an EMU E5000 sampler and love it -
I started with an ESI-32 way way back and love the emu bank/preset
arrangement on their samplers but I can not for the life of me
figure this XL-7 out. All I want to do is be able to create banks
and assign sounds to midi channels like I do with the sampler. On
the sampler, When you load a bank, it loads all the presets and
lines them up on the correct midi channels. In the simplest of
terms, how would I do this with the XL-7? I want to have one bank
per song like on the sampler and lay out the sounds I want on the
correct midi channels and have no sounds respond to the other midi
channels. It really seems that the internal sequencer is getting in
the way and that's what is confusing me.... I dont want anything to
do with this sequncer as I use my computer for arrangments.

thank you in advance,

Unlike your E4, all of the sounds are instantly available all the time
without having to "load" anything. There's two ways to do this.
Either simply send the appropriate program change command from your
sequencer, or, save a multisetup (which you seem to be already doing)
with has all the right presets. You can also disable channels in the
MIDI menu (these also get saved in the multisetup).

I'd also recommend erasing pattern 000'0 in your XL-7, so that the unit
will automatically load the most recently used multisetup on powerup.
Also, if you're using an external sequencer, you could disable the
reception of song start/continue in the MIDI menu as well in the event
that your sequencer transmits it.
