gear to get?????

gear to get?????

2001-10-09 by scory5@qwest.net

I currently produce trance music mostly with Reason software and
other soft synths and am looking to buy a hardware synth that has bad-
ass leads (good analog too), basses, strings, FX, and drums. Is there
1 workstation that can accomplish all of these??? It doesn't seem
like the xl7 can do it all but it does have some nice sounds. I
started looking into the Korg Karma but it seems to be geared more
toward organic, Milli Vanilli type sounds & beats.

I need to hear from someone who produces trance and has experience
with lots of gear so I can get into the right thing.

I would rather pay more to buy 1 workstation that does it all than
buy a bunch of separate equipment.

Any help would be most appreciated!!!!

Thanks in advance.

Workstation like with sequencer and stuff? or just the synth?

For Trance Synths

Novation Supernova has the warmest sounds ever :)
Yamaha CS6X or CS6XR <- rack version where meant for trance. It has
like 128 appregios. Most of them trancy.
I have the CS2X and I battle myself to make a hard house track, cause
I start with punchy beats, phat hoovery baseline; and as soon as I
touch that keyboard, everything turns intro trance somehow... Like
BXR kinda thing, you know. CS6X uses Yamaha's AWM2 (or something)
Wave synth technology but you can expand it with a Analog board for
Analog Synthesis if you still insist.

Access Virus B is way phat too.

If I had the money I would get myself the Novation Supernova. It does
have like the highest specs in polyphony and LFOs and shit.
But the Novations Supernova PRO X III is like $4000 ? But worthed.
I was playing with the regular Novation supernova at GUitar center
and it was priced to $2100.

Another great synth around is the Waldorf Q. But I would pick the
Micro Q for Happy Hardcore, Hard House, Techno; You know, Hard stuff.

Don't even think into getting the ROland JP series cause they suck
ass. Anything I have bought from Roland sucks ass. Maybe just the dr-
202 it's kinda cool...

go to www.harmony-central.com and look at the synth reviews, or go to
www.synthplanet.com and print out the specs of each synth, sit down
with a cup of coffe and compare them.

About Trancy Workstations

Don't get MC Roland series cause they are toys and they suck ass.

I have an RS7000 from Yamaha, and again it's difficult to me to get
Hard House sounds out of it. Everything turns trance.
But with the XL-7 the Hard stuff comes right easily :)

Re: gear to get?????

You will find most of the folks getting money to do this don't just
use one thing. The plain truth is it takes a couple of synths to
really cover what you need. Here are some of my recommendations /
personal uses:

Waldorf Microwave : I prefer the orginal Microwave to the II or XT
still. Your milage may vary. Once you use one for a few days and
re-listen to trance, you will understand just how much this beastie
gets around. Used : Pads, Leads, Strange noises

Nord Lead 3 : Possibly getting into being over used these days, still
a solid performer. Analog style controls, so you get some knobs to
tweek. Reasonable keyboard with goofy wooden bender. Used : Bass
Leads, some FX / Noises

With those two, a resonable effects box that can do tempo sync delay
and a mixer you could be in business. You can use the Reason stuff
for drums. If you have the money I would recommed an XL-1, because it
covers so many bases for this so well. It is probably the best pad
generator out of what I have mentioned, and has some resonable drum
kits in it. Don't expect to get really good leads out of it (your
milage my vary). The Bass sounds will never be as powerful as the
Nord, but all around the module is quite amazing.

Hope that helps.

Bruce

Oh yeah, I use lots of Roland gear. Not all of it sucks. (MKS-80?)

right on dude....thanks! thatl keep me busy in my research for sure.

Out of all of those you mentioned, which has a sequencer included? I
would prefebably like a keboard synth because I'm more hands-on. Any
keyboard synth workstations that can do it all trance wise? I'm a
very pickey producer, I'll spend 3 hours getting a high-hat to sound
the way I want with the right combo of FX n stuff so I need something
that is totally modular and editable.

Thanks again!

Re: gear to get?????

The Roland JP series which I don't recommend ( pls don't buy that
shite ) You can record your own appregios and play them with the
keyboard or with an external sequencer. I think the Novation can do
that too.

They all have appregios, not really a sequencer.

Your best bet is to use an external sequencer.
RS7000, Akai MPC or the XL-7

Cause all this synths, have Preset Appregios. You know, like up down
octaves and simple stuff. The CS6X has the most preset appregios tho.
128. Pretty neat appregios, kind of sliced. Oh and it has a
smartmedia card slot so you can save your stuff.
The others you have to save through MIDI bulk.

Now if you really want Desktop sequencers/synth. Yamaha has the AN200
and DX200
http://www.yamaha.com/cgi-win/webcgi.exe/DsplyModel/?gTGN00005AN200
http://www.yamaha.com/cgi-win/webcgi.exe/DsplyModel/?gTGN00005DX200

Analog and FM synths they have a 16 step sequencer ( like buttons to
do what you do with Reason but just 16) lots of knobs, but they are
not as phat as the others I mentioned before. I quote they Yamaha
website "...A Kickin' Home Studio..."

I feel bad talking so much about Yamaha and others gear on a EMU
group tho :/
But for real, are there any trance oriented Desktop synths with
sequencer from EMU? Cause I would like to try one.

You should also download the manual from the internet, read their
overview and go to the store and play with it.
I do that all the time to carefully select my gear.
That's the best thing to do.
For real, Store attendants love to be asked a million questions and
then see you leave buying just a MIDI cable or something.
You can then go and buy your stuff from a cheaper store or website.

peace
-Dave-

I agree. Personally, I think the XL-7 has the best synth architecture of the
bunch, but then again, I'm biased. =)

XL-7 has 300 factory plus 100 user arp patterns. All 128 voices can be
arpeggiated simultaneously.

I would think the XL-7 fills this need pretty nicely...

This is totally correct. Try a synth/sequencer before you buy it. It's the
best way to see if it works for you. Get the feel of the UI, sounds, ease of
use, etc. and see if it's something you can live with.

Well, if you do this with an XL-7 you will buy one. ITS A TRAP I TELL
YOU!

Ah well, at least the money will be well spent.

Aaron may be biased, but I agree. I'm getting one which I'll use for
D&B. Yet, I think the XL-7 would be better for Trance than for D&B.
It's that cool.
