Re: [xl7] How to setup XL to control VSTi's

The first thing you need to do is get the documentation for whatever softsynth you want to control, especially the part that tells you what CC number is mapped to each knob in the softsynth. If you can't find this, a great resource is www.kvr-vst.com, which has a whole section dedicated to just that info for virtually (no pun intended) every softsynth out there. We'll use the Pro-52 as an example, here's the link that shows you all the CC info: http://www.kvr-vst.com/midi-pro-52.htm Next you want to go to the Controllers Menu in the XX-7 and set up each knob to transmit that corresponding CC number based on what you want your knobs to do. It's probably easiest to think of the controller knobs as being assigned the same functions as in Quick Edit. So knob A would transmit Filter Cutoff, Knob B would be assigned to Filter Resonance, Knob C would be Filter Envelope Attack, etc. That's not to say you can't make them control anything you want, it's just easier to remember what each knob does if you keep some sort of standard among your Programmable knob set-ups. Anyway, as you can see from the above link, the Filter Cutoff knob on the Pro-52 is mapped by default to CC#70, which is different from the industry standard of #74. So, press the Controllers Button and scroll until it says Programmable Knobs. At this point you can see which knob is shown by the number in the upper left corner of the screen, just like the Pattern tracks. Cursor to the lower line and change the Ctrl: field to 70, the Ch: field to 01A (or whatever port and channel you wish), and the last field to EXT. Bingo, you're A Knob in should now control the filter cutoff in the Pro-52 VSTi. You can now go back and set up each of the rest of your knobs as you wish. When you're done, be sure to save the Multisetup, call it Pro-52 to make it easier to find. If for some reason you still can't get the knobs to control a VSTi, make sure that the instrument is set to receive on the same channel as your knobs are set to transmit on. Hope this helps! Have fun tweaking! rEalm (maybe we should set up a folder in our Files section where users can upload Multisetups where they've already done the work?)
