Re: [xl7] glide

The glide button status doesn't get saved with the preset. Rather, it's
initial state is derived from the preset.

If any one (at least) layer has a glide amount other than 0.000 sec/oct, the
light will come on, and pressing it will remove all glide.

If all layers are 0.000 sec/oct, the light will be off (even if there are
patchcords adding glide!) and pressing the button will add ~0.177 sec/oct
glide amount.

Personally, for the presets that I want the light to come on, I tweak one
layer to be 0.002 sec/oct, set the rest to 0.000, then I hook up MidiN to
glide amount at 100% for all layers that I want glide. This way, I have a
knob that controlls glide amount, and a switch to turn it on and off.

Make sure there is a glide value of at least 1.

Think that should work since the glide feature changes nothing unless
u set it to a minimal Value!

\Hope this helps

IS IT WORTH IT?!

2002-05-07 by mikexl7

Yes the box is worth it.

This box had it's issues in the start but it is a very stable unit
now. I love my xl7 and cant think of anything I would replace it
with at any price let alone the modist one that is.

Pattern swtiching is now rock solid.
You can save and arange you patterns with your computer.
It is small.
The key pad is amasing.
the sounds are great.
The outputs are more flexable than any gear i have ever heard of.
It is built like a tank not like a toy.
I could go on and on about this unit, bottom line if you want a
killer unit buy a XL7.

Peace

Mike G.

Ok, guys. Thats what i thought. It's funny how things are. If
something is great, you never hear about it. if there's somthing
wrong with it you hear a LOT about it. I think most of the
negitive posts that I see refer to an older OS.

I have not played with this unit yet. Nor will I likely be able to
before I buy it. But that should be ok. I plan to replace
everything in my setup with the XL-7 and the RS-7000 .... so far
that seems like a very good idea. I'm sick of hauling racks of gear
and want to narrow it down to one rack and one suitcase, 5 minute
setup time, and rock the floor... Also, I encorporate Turntablism,
scratching, juggling, and cutting into my sets. It's only
imparitive that I have somthing that's compact and can easily fit
above the decks.

The sound of Emu Products is AMAZING. I can't wait to get one of
these things and load it with the XL, World, and err... any chance
i can get 8 slots ;) - And finally somthing that can replace my old
alesis sequencers.

ok, you got me excited again. I was a bit worried.... however...

I haven't heard much of the jungle/Drum&bass community saying much
about this unit... anyone?

I agree it is one of the best machines I have worked with, once the soft
sampler is integrated, it in my book is just as if not mere powerful than
the mpc2000, the filters in the xx-7 alone is $1000.

STOP for a moment :)

This is how rumors get started. However, I sent a lengthy email to
ensoniq with many questions. Their answer to many of them? Not
*YET*....

Does this mean we'll have a sequencer that supports different
lengths for each TRACK? (16 here, 8 there (looped 2ice))

maybe... but it seems a bit of a stretch...

Bottom line is that I need a sampler as well. I need somthing with
a decent sequencer in it. The Korg ES-1 doesn't cut it either. I'm
not goin fisher price if you know what i mean.

Why, what do you suggest?

Don't get rid of your ES-1, for DNB you will definately want it for beats. I
re-bought an ES-1 to work with the XL-7. Also use it for drum sequencing.

I was a bit worried.... however...

I haven't heard much of the jungle/Drum&bass community saying much
about this unit... anyone?

If you're just triggering phrases, I'd say sp808 or SU700. The RS7000 is
really just an SU700 with the RM1x sound engine thrown in, and that sound
engine isn't anywhere close to what you're getting with the XX-7 (ie, it
sucks), so why pay for it? I had an sp808, and as long as you don't need
more than 4 samples playing at once I'd highly recommend it. You can get
a great effects in there, and back up to Zip is really nice too.

I've got an mp7 and an RS7000 (both for sale, btw).
The mp7 is the better rompler. The RS7000 has superior
sequencing and effects, which for my use delegated the
mp7 to use as a sound module. If you are planning on
using the mp7 as the main sequencer and are going to
use the pads a lot, spend some time with one before
you plunk down the money.

You say the sequencer in the RS7000 is better. I am courious can
you change from pattern from pattern on the fly with that unit?

I know from using the RM1x that you could not do this making the xl
a obvious choice for me. Just wondering.

The short answer: After I got through the bulk of the
mp7 & RS7000 learning curves I found them too tedious
compared to a computer based system.

The long answer would cover a lot of subjective ground
and various limitations of each box.

The patterns are grouped into styles, 16 patterns per style.
I found 16 patterns a reasonable limit to work within and
treated "styles" as if they were songs comprised of 16
patterns or less. In that context, switching patterns is
glitch free.

One aspect of the RS7000 that I found very useful was the
5 mute memories. You can do things like break a pattern
into two 8 track sequences that run at the same time, and
switch between the two at any time without resetting the
pattern back to beat 1:0:0 by toggling the track mute
status(s). I.E. Toggle between tracks 1-8 muted and
tracks 9-16 muted by tapping a button.

A setup like that is very flexible and a lot of fun to
play in real time. Stuff like midi based echo and swing
can be tweaked [non-destructively] in real time, and
can be applied to one track, tracks 1-8, tracks 9-16 or
all tracks at once. Slave the xx7 to the RS7000 and
leverage the xx7 rompler capabilities and you have one
heck of a hybrid system for live work.

If the sequencer is in the RS7000 is like the one in the RM1x then, sadly,
it is probably better than the XX-7's. I bought a RM1x awhile ago just
for it's sequencer and MIDI editing features (which are the best of any
groove box right now), but returned it after getting really sick of the
limit patch editing.

If anyones interested I am selling an SP808 pro sampler with the added inout/digital expansion card, sweet and perfect for a heavy duty DJ set.

If you're just triggering phrases, I'd say sp808 or SU700. The RS7000 is really just an SU700 with the RM1x sound engine thrown in, and that sound engine isn't anywhere close to what you're getting with the XX-7 (ie, it sucks), so why pay for it? I had an sp808, and as long as you don't need more than 4 samples playing at once I'd highly recommend it. ;You can get a great effects in there, and back up to Zip is really nice too.

Bottom line is that I need a sampler as well. I need somthing with
a decent sequencer in it. The Korg ES-1 doesn't cut it either. I'm
not goin fisher price if you know what i mean.

Why, what do you suggest?
