Does anyone here object to having the currently private group's discussions/posts/conversations/etc. made publically available?

Does anyone here object to having the currently private group's discussions/posts/conversations/etc. made publically available?

2019-10-27 by smw-mail@...

I just found out about the following. If there are objections I see 2 options (1) not to invite this group to make the archives public or (2) people who don't want their posts to be public and delete them (assuming we still have that ability).
Unfortunately, of the 2302 members we have, some may not have been active for years, their e-mail addresses are not current and they cannot be asked, etc.

Too bad Verizon/Yahoo sprung this on us last minute.  I am not sure there is enough time to try to ask everyone who has posted. And with tomorrow's deadline, I am not sure we can do a poll to try to (1) reduce the 2302 members to just those who are active and (2) do use a "present and voting" majority thing.

Adding Private Groups to the Public Archive

Administrators / Moderators can request that their private group (we consider a private group to be one that requires approval for new members) be included in the public archive. Before you do this, please ensure that the members of the group are happy about being part of the public archive. [empashis added]

To add the group to the list of private groups to be archived, all you need to do is send a membership invite to the email archiveteamprivateyahoogroup@gmail.com. (Note that only group admins can do this). We'll be monitoring that email regularly to accept any membership requests we receive. Once that account is a member, the group should be scheduled to be part of the public archive.

Please make sure that when you invite the Archive Team account, you do not select the Add only to mailing list option, as this will prevent Archive Team from archiving the group.

Steve ...

This is not an objection per se ... I could not care less if anyone read my posts.

But, won't this lead to endless "I made $17,223.45 last month while sitting on the toilet."

How do public groups deal with spammers?

Steve ...

I've forwarded you directly off group an email I received as a Yahoo Moderator. It clearly states that 'private' groups will persist.

Please consider it.

This being the case (which would also allay any concerns about spam in a public group) it seems to me that the way to go is to simply find a repository for content, e.g., archive of group comments and files, and continue to communicate through the existing group.

What is not clear is whether email messages that have been archived will persist and whether ongoing emails will be archived.

Not that Verizon cares, but their communications to date have raised a host of unanswered questions.

Excellent questions about whether or not any of the options will open members up to spam and will e-mail addresses be vulnerable. I will try to find out.

There are currently discussion groups/threads--some people have been at Gearslutz and FB. Not sure if anyone else here plans to join Encyclotronic. Personally, I think more forums is good.

My top interest is in preserving the wisdom that has accumulated in the discussions. If spam avoidance cannot be guaranteed and/or e-mail addresses become more vulnerable, there is another option: Obtain the conversations and edit them into new FAQs sheets, preferably with an index.  Contributor's tips, suggestions, etc. could be listed with name attributions. I will look into that as well.

Today is 3 days after October 28th. I am wondering if this will be posted or sent out as e-mails to approx.2000 individuals. Verizon did say it was going to an e-mail only system. Arrrrgggghhhhh.

Note: Conversations and Message History are going away. To me conversations are posts and message history is the searchable archived posts.  I expected the UI that let us add new posts/replies/etc. to conversations to stop working 28 Oct where it would be view only + e-mail replies and that in December, all content (including all the past posts/conversations) would disappear.
I had verizon phone/internet services for years and years.  In my experience they change things at will and don't always tell people. Also, they say things that are inaccurate. I will spare the examples; I am sure others have had similar experiences.

What features will go away?
  • Files
  • Polls
  • Links
  • Photos
  • Folders
  • Calendar
  • Database
  • Attachments
  • Conversations
  • Email Updates
  • Message Digest
  • Message History
