The End of a Era (part 2)

The End of a Era (part 2)

2019-10-16 by smw-mail@...

Not sure if this will get posted.  I wrote a "farewell" message abut 20 minutes ago, and it has not shown up yet.

The Yahoo Groups Banner says:  "Starting December 14, 2019 Yahoo Groups will no longer host user created content on its sites. New content can no longer be uploaded after October 28, 2019."

However, the "Learn More" page says (among other things): "On October 21st, you will no longer be able to upload any content to the site. To share info with members of your groups, you'll continue to be able to do so via email."

Also, about an hour ago, I posted a public "thank you for the heads up" in the group that alerted me (and everyone in the group) to the pending demise of these discussion groups.

Perhaps the servers are working overtime due to the announcement. Perhaps they have shut down sooner than posted.

Steve ...

Another group I belong to has been looking at group.io, a site allegedly started by the creator of Yahoo.groups.

Purportedly there is ability for group admins to port across.

I am familiar with the website software from another forum and it works better for me. Just personal choice.

>> What is the business model of groups.io? Is it sustainable? What if they say the freemium doesn't work for them anymore so "pay or go away"? What if they just collapse?

Let me add, I do not have (or have the technical skills to install and run) a bulletin board/discussion forum, but as far as resources (documents and files), it has been on my agenda to develop a "sexier" front-end to my ftp holdings and to make plans to zip up a version of the site to make available.

That has been on hold in part due to personal health reasons but also because there are so many sites nowadays that have much of the content only Frankie Fischer and I had been hosting.  I know some international groups used to harvest my entire site seemingly of a daily basis.  I have also seen some of my "exclusive content" on places that charge money for downloading privileges (Scribd, among others)--not only E-Mu stuff, but my academic writings as well!!!!!!

I very much share the concerns you raised about preservation of content, including discussions/conversations.  They are very important questions to look into--not just for groups.io but other potential hosts as well. Thanks for thinking long-term.

There is another issue related to the large numbers this group has (members) and I'd be interested in thoughts on that.  I am not sure that once we go to e-mail only, I want to be sending e-mails to hundreds of e-mail addresses which might not even be in the hands of the original members.

Any thoughts on that?

As well, there are many "members" listed to receive digests or no emails or special notices only.  I have yet to see how Verizon will be handling the e-mails to all the various recipients starting (I presume) 10-28-2019.  So we know that all groups will be come private, there will be no digests, and it will be e-mail only.

Maybe Verizon has updated info about that. I will look, but if anyone has seen info about that, please share!!

And if anyone has thoughts on pruning the e-mail list (should it be done? just wait and see? etc.) please share ideas.

Thanks.
