Occasionally mine (albeit an XL-7, same stuff, just different case and power on graphics) will do that. In my case I've just turned it off for several minutes and then turned it on and it's been fine.
If the problem persists it sounds like something more serious, like a problem with the main board, or perhaps more likely, with the power supply.
On thing I've noticed with mine is that it tends to be notoriously unstable if I send it MIDI data while it is starting up. It can work fine for an hour or three minutes, and then hang and reboot, and sometimes even power cycling it in this state just causes it to hang like you describe. Don't know why it does this, but in my case the cure seems to be to keep the MIDI input silent (i.e. unplug the cable or use other means to see to that it gets no MIDI data, like keeping a MIDI patchbay switched off) while the unit is starting up and reaches the ordinary pattern name display. Then it seems rock solid (touch wood).
