Similarities between Proteus 2500 and Command Stations?

From the looks of it, the Proteus 2500 is a Command Station without the pads, pitch strip and octave buttons. Is it in fact the same main board inside? The connector arrangement on the back looks identical.
And that begs the question, could a mainboard from a 2500 be used as a replacement in a Command Station? It would also require being loaded with the appropriate Command Station firmware, so that needs to work too.
