Xl7 booting lock-ups + screen dimming HELP

Xl7 booting lock-ups + screen dimming HELP

2016-07-01 by wyschmatt@...

Hello all--

I've recently put my XL7 back into my roster, forgetting that there had been problems plaguing it when it went into retirement.

The two problems are:

-->Locking up while booting. This is intermittent, but it has almost always done it. I think...I've had this thing for almost ten years; it's difficult to remember. It usually stops somewhere in the screen with the blocks figures/progress bar part, not with words.  Occasionally it locks up after being on too. I figure this usually has to do with some major midi overload, but they could be related.

--> The display screen is sometimes full brightness, sometimes flickers, sometimes darker.

I know many will deride me for this, but the way I have always solved theses problems is by giving the unit a firm whack or two or five. Often this works.

Anyway, I'd like to move beyond abusing my gear and towards a more long-term and sophisticated solution.

I've heard about problems with the power units for the Command Stations.

It passes the system check in diagnostic mode. All the wire harnesses are tight; i've checked them so many times. All the screws are in.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Cheers,

Wyatt

Do you have access to another Command Station (of a friend, relative, lover...)? I would try running your XL-7 with another PSU.

Ruling out a power supply problem is a good place to start, however it is unlikely that that would fail. the XL and 2000 line of units have pretty decent PSUs. I have never had one fail on me..

I have had the same issue in the past.. Provided you have taken good care of the unit and stored it in a dry environment, it is either due to a dying LCD or a bad clock oscillator (which is controlling the LCD). This is a common issue across the entire range of Proteus style units. It is more likely to be the clock osc but it can't hurt to  replacing the LCD first to see if that helps. I only say that because you can get a replacement 24x2 LCD for around $5USD if you are able to solder the ribbon cable yourself.

Whoops!  I meant: MP7, not XL7...does that make a difference? The MP7s have bad power supplies?
Ahh well, it mostly works.  Regarding new ones, though, are they available? I recall reading on this board years ago something to the effect that they are impossible to find.

If whacking the E-Mu helped, perhaps (if you haven't done so already), try re-seating the Sound ROMs, checking the internal connectors, and making sure the AC power plug is making a snug fit.  It's a long shot, but if this helps, it might save some costly repairs.

I've had this problem with the screen light, it is a problem with the screen led power cable. If you bend the pins slightly so it makes more solid contact in the connector it will work.
As far as the reboots, not sure about that one.

in my case the screen would dim when browsing patterns/songs. as the leds for the encoders and track buttons would change the display would dim accordingly

i swapped the psu with a spare i had bought on ebay and there is no more dimming. i was using a dj lamp though for the better part of a year which i will probably stop doing from now on
