update: i found a roland um-one locally and have since updated my mp7 to 2.0 and the usb drives in the machine are now online

It's good to know that Roland's um-one works! Thanks for sharing that.

A few years ago I tested an interconnectivity mio (also a 1x1) with sysex commands and patch dumps on a Casio CZ synth and that worked. I did not think to test it on the E-Mu's.
