Digital
sound factory is your best route. Tim Swartz, the owner of
DSF,was the head of E-mu sound design for 20 plus years. I
have not been an E-mu employee for nearly 10 years, so
what I what I have to offer would be limited, I'm not
even sure if parts would be available for such old
equipment. The idea be hide custom flash roms was to give
the user a way to share samples and instruments created by
the E4 Ultra, basically satellite E4's. The Flash board
was a proprietary part designed by E-MU, those will be hard
to find. Tim would be a good person to chat with though, if
there's a way he will know.    I
rejoined the list as an artists that loves his command
stations and is excited to see so many people still using
them, reminding of the first drawing, concept proposal and
specification I wrote for version 0.1 close to 15 years ago.
I am in a
totally different industry now so a lot of the underlying
technology, chips, circuit boards etc. discussions are going
to be beyond my scope. But I will help as much as can, the
nice thing is I'm will be completely unfiltered now,
might even give you my real opinion of Ensoniq at some

It might
be nice if those of us who would want to see the creation of
new samples, presets, banks, etc. for our well-loved
"legacy" gear had a tool that would cross-compile
resources for the new ROMs as well as the Proteus X/Proteus
VX/Emulator X line.  As I mentioned before, I think it
would be great to a large number of original arp patterns

Perhaps
an arrangement could be made with whoever might own the
rights to the original samples or has the official
imprimatur to resell them (if such a person exists) to
repackage them. It might be nice to know what the terms

Re: [xl7] command station enthusiasm

2016-01-12 by George G

Down is the email I've sent on facebook to Dave Rossum one of the founders of EMU who is doing a new company with eurorack modules.

I will not not be worry of any copyright thing as long you make a new design of the flash rom and also if us will use our own samples and arp phrases, hope with all this discutions will have a real success.

So did you contacted Tim Swartz? If so what he said?

Email to the Deve the founder of EMU:

"Hello Dave,

My name is George and I am a professional dj and producer of electronic music and my all favorite piece of gear is an EMU MP7 with a XL7 rom that I use in the studio but also live. Also some of my producers friends have Proteus modules and Command stations.

I love EMU and the history you made with your company, the music I love was done with a lot of EMU equipment! Too bad the company didnt continued the legacy...

I know you are one of the founders of EMU and you suported your team when Proteus modules and Command stations were designed.

From a few years there is a discution on this XL7 yahoo group regarding the making of a custom flash rom for our command stations and emu modules (ex Orbit 3), so we can load our own samples and midi phrases.

So the problem was that flash roms need it to be setup and write in a EMU sampler, also a big problem is there are no flash roms left in the market and when appear on ebay they are so expensive… you see maybe 1-2 every year...

Actually one of the yahoo group users worked a little bit in this direction and he started to emulate the board, you have a pictures attached with his try.
As you see attached his rom is similar to the original but the problem is he was stucked in the process of learning the pcb characteristics and logics of the roms. He got the ideea to make somehow a computer editor and write the flash roms with our own samples and then move them thru usb in the devices.

The group has more that 2000 members, most of them requested this every month and they will be amazed and will buy those things, also a lot of guys on gearslutz and also a lot of DJs and producers friends of mine will be on the buyer list so surely will be a lot of customers for something like this with a lot of financial potential 😊 Those devices are still used in studios and make them open to new custom sounds and midi will made them used! The synth engine snd those filters are the best in s digital device!

So in behalf of the yahoo group and of all the owners of this devices I ask you if you want to join this idea and help us creating those flash roms so we can keep the legacy of those amazing machines alive 😊 Maybe the solution for you is much easier 😊

Your answer will be much apreciated

Thanks you so much

George"

Then I got a message from one of the employee:

Hi George,

Marco at Rossum Electro-Music here. Yes, sorry for the slow reply, but we have been in the studio the past few days shooting videos.

As you can probably tell, we are pretty crazed at the moment getting ready for NAMM and working on our new modules. However, I will pass your message on to Dave. We can't make any promises, as our direction is a bit different at the moment, but we appreciate knowing that there are people out there interested in this. We value all input when deciding our product direction.

Thanks!

- Marco
