PX-7 Factory User Data

PX-7 Factory User Data

2015-04-10 by zaugenfeld@...

I came across someone selling a PX-7 command station. Not a lot of info out there on it, it's basically a gray MP-7/XL-7 but contains the drum ROM. I really like it except there's one problem... it came with the factory user data wiped! This means no user synth presets, which is fine, as I have experience editing and saving synth presets (I've owned a Proteus 2000 for years). But it also means no factory sequencer patterns! As I'm quite new to the Emu sequencer functionality, I'd love to be able to see how certain patterns were designed by the guys at Emu back in the day. I've seen similar questions answered here in internet searches, though they were regarding the XL-7 or MP-7, and learned that the files for those units are available somehow through this group. But how about the PX-7? Does anyone have any info on this or know someone who might?

Thanks so much,
zz

Patterns are just MIDI files, and you can upload them to the PX-7 with E-Loader. I think they should be in the Files section, and if not, I think I have them in my DRUM equipped XL-7, so I can upload them. If the price is OK, go for it, drum sounds are excellent in PX-7.

For the synth presets, the default user presets are just copies of the first few banks of the ROMs, which I believe will be copied back with a factory reset.
not the sequence patterns though.

Thanks all for the input. I should have explicitly stated that I already bought the PX-7, even with the cleared user data. Since I know Emu rack-mount synths well, I knew about the user banks of synth presets, but not the pattern data. I do see the PX-7 patterns file available in the Files section and I will definitely download it (as well as install/configure ELoader).

Followup question: if they're just MIDI files, can I also use ELoader to load the factory patterns from XL-7 or MP-7 without having the XL-7 or MP-7 ROM? This is more out of curiosity, because I actually do have the X-Lead v2 ROM and the MK-6 ROM in my Proteus 2000.

Thanks again, I am loving this group so far!

Yes, and if you have the ROMs available, it would be a good idea to put them in PX-7. I think they would Just Work with respective patterns. Otherwise you will get the patterns with all tracks silent (since they would point to non-existing presets), and getting them to sound interesting could probably cost you a lot of time.

Another thing worth remembering: even though Command Stations have 8 banks to save 128 patterns in each, if you feed your PX-7 with XL, MP & PX patterns, it will leave you something like 7% of available storage space left for your own patterns (which is a serious bummer in my opinion).

You could also load the patterns in any midi sequencer in your computer to study them in a drum grid editor, or play them from there.  The songs, though, I wouldn't know how to re-assemble them because they're saved separately from the patterns.

I am very frustrated about low memory on my PX-7, and that there is no way to "erase" a pattern without using e-loader.
