e-mu legacy gear support

e-mu legacy gear support

2014-07-23 by smw-mail@...

A few weeks ago I looked for the usual legacy gear support via www.emu.com which used to be redirected to a creativelabs page that had links to legacy gear, only I couldn't find it. I thought I had done something wrong until today when someone wanted to join our little group because files were no longer in the most recent usual spot. If its really gone again, this would make the third time I am aware of that it has disappeared.  (The previous time, evidently people complained and after 6 months or so, it was put back.)

A google search for "e-mu legacy gear support" included the following: http://www.creative.com/emu/support/downloads/legacy/ . So it still seems to be there even if the creative front website doesn't have a link.

Well, it seems that as of a few minutes ago, the page I gave is available:

1. Go to w w w . e m u . c o m [without the spaces].
2. When redirected to the creative front page, select support.
3. Towards the bottom you should see:

If your product is not listed above, please click here or visit our non-PC hardware page listing.

The "click here" link takes you to the end-of-useable-life page. The "non-PC hardware" link takes you to the page I gave--at least it did a few minutes ago.

Hope this helps.

Oooops. I spoke too soon.  Evidently the links do not work--at least the one I tried didn't.  Here's what I got (not sure if its my internet that's messing up or their server):

Yes, that is correct.  All of the links are non-functional. I went there yesterday to download all the latest OS and Command-prep data, to upgrade all of my modules.  No joy whatsoever.

The ridiculous statement along the lines of  'no support offered any more' Creative get-out clauses, are also shameful, if not totally criminal.
How much does it cost to keep a data base functioning, as an important resource and a  'thank you' to a loyal customer base.?

I suppose they expect user groups to provide user support from now on? Typical sleazy business 'practices'!

A cynical and fraudulent organisation not fit for purpose!

 With my 2 x Proteus 2500's, Virtuoso, and XL7 alone, I've spent almost £4,000.00
(Yes... Four Effing Thousand Quid!!)   (plus more investment in loads of extra Rom cards) and I also have a Carnaval..

Creative?

Creative effing sleazy rip-off!

well, we all know Creative bought E-Mu for their DSP designs and have only
been playing lip service to their pro side for years....

Not trying to defend Creative in any way - but the last I've heard, they are not in the best of financial situations. Might explain the lack of support. Maybe there aren't so many people left in the company to support their legacy.

Aha, so it's not just me! ;)
Two days ago I was looking for a pdf or other electronic version of the list of Siedlaczek ROM presets and spent way too much time on the Creative site to end up realizing it wasn't there at all :'(
Anyway, below is the list of the e-mu documents I have, which I can forward to upload on some common site if there is interest :)
I also have *somewhere* the emu.ins cakewalk file containing all possible e-mu instruments, but I still have to dig for it :/
Cheers

Django,

I looked here in this group and there is only 100mb of storage for files??? The P2k group has 2gb available for storage. If it is ok with Steve (P2k Owner) maybe you could create a folder and upload these manuals there. Some sort of organization scheme would probably be best....

Hi,
actually I don't own an XL7, I'm a P2k/PK6 owner. I only subscribed because one day I got interested in something and it turned out the discussion was taking place on this list.
Anyway as a test I just uploaded the B3 manual on the p2k group; please let me know if I should upload more

Cheers

Thanks for the offer to share your docs. A day or so ago, I started grabbing the links for sites claiming to have docs.  My plan is to take an inventory of who has what.  From that we can see what's not anywhere. One problem is that some of the sites that seem to have docs, don't.; so, part of the task is to document who seems to have docs but really doesn't (such as the WayBackMachine and popeye-x).

Re: [xl7] e-mu legacy gear support

2014-08-25 by smw-mail@...

I just typed up a second post about this, and it won't go through. Let me try pasting hi here.A day or two ago, I wrote up a blurb about the issue; however, I am still uncomfortable with neo and when I went to send the post, I accidentally hi reply.  That erased the message and I was so disappointed in myself, I didn't have the interest to retype it all. But here's the short of it: Over the years I have seen the content for the e-mu site at creative disappear several times. Eventually it, it came back. I seem to recall the last time (2011, was it? - well, the last time before now), it was gone for several months--I am thinking like 6 months.

So, the last time (before 2014) a few people created websites to host the docs for our beloved, but orphaned gear. The Frankster set up the docs at his website, and I think shortly thereafter he created with wiki. I really like his site, and a day or two ago, I revisited it and checked out the links he has at the bottom.

One fellow E-mu fan zipped up all of his e-mu files and sent them to me. I didn't post them because by the time I had a chance to look through them, creative had fixed the site. A number of people had alerted them to the fact the the docs were not available and from what I understand, they put a programmer to the task of restoring the site.

Because of the server error we get when we try to download docs, I think its probably nothing malicious; probably a page or file was renamed, moved, or deleted. So maybe they will fix it again, though who knows how long it might take. It is really just a service they provide, because they make no money from us legacy gear lovers.

When it came back, I decided to leave my site up (just in case their site disappeared again); but I decided not to clean it up, add additional docs, etc.  However, I am thinking it might not be a bad project to work on.

As I wrote, my first goal is to sort out who has what, to sort out which sites have dead links, etc. So, I started compiling a list. From what I have see, the Frankster's site is the best.
http://francisfisher.me.uk/problem/2011/emu-legacy-archive/

There are Yahoo groups with docs, such as the XL-7, P2K, P2500, and Orbit 3.  (Yes, there are some others.) Other sites listed at his site are: Emu Legacy Wiki.

 E-Mu | SoundProgramming.Net, and

Synth Gear Docs: An Archive .

The emulegacy wiki lists popeye-x.com as a resource, but when I checked that, all the links pointed back to creative. The WayBackMachine has some site grabs or former incarnations of the e-mu site, but for all the docs and files I tried to get, the links were dead.  I don't think their site grabber software knew to select the files.

However, there seem to be some manuals here: Synthesizer Manuals: Emu : Free Texts : Download & Streaming : Internet Archive

I know there are people here and at the other Yahoo groups that have various docs and files, so if you don't find what you need at the other sites, please ask.

Steve
