MP7 send program changes to SP505?

MP7 send program changes to SP505?

2014-06-14 by got_hatchet@...

Hey. Now I know the command stations can send program changes externally as the manual confirms this. However no where in the manual am I able to find directions on how to achieve this.
Advice?
Thanks

Patrick

Hi Patrick,

Program Change is just a MIDI message, it is not internal or external in its nature. If the track is marked as external, all Program Changes it contains would be sent to the MIDI Out and interpreted by an external device receiving them. It may happen that you would want to send out Program Changes which are "wrong" or "make no sense" if interpreted by MP7 itself - that's OK, just make sure that particular track is "external", not "both".

I've never used Command Station in such way, but I would assume that if you want to send some non-CS-compatible Program Changes, there are only two options: you can record them, or you can use some Event editing tools, adjusting the Program Changes created by CS itself.

HTH,

Bruno

Thanks for the info. Was hoping I might have been able to record program change numbers right in the track without having to use my sp505 to send them because in that unit its the only way to really use it with a sequencer.
Thanks

Just to clarify: you want to record program change messages (aka patch changes) on the fly while recording instead of editing them into a track aftereards, right? I know you can do the latter. I am wondering if there is a way while recording to dial up a preset then pressing a button like repeat to have it inserted. I will test that. Steve

Unfortunately, if there is a way to record preset changes on the fly from the E-Mu while recording patterns, I have not found it.

If changing presets after a track has been recorded would work for you, you might want to create an external pattern template with placeholder data that you can tweak to be a program change after the track has been recorded. (I still have a pattern called All Ext at 000^0.)

If its important enough to you and you have an input to the E-Mu available, you might consider a device that sends program changes >>to<< the E-Mu. You can record them; however,  so far as I can tell it only gets passed through to external gear either on playback or when looped around in record mode.

Mot sure this will help with what you want to do, but I figured since I tested it, I might as well write it up.

I guess I got a bit mixed up I apologize. It seems what I hoped to be able to do was try and map note numbers to the pads. See the Boss SP505 can only be controlled by external sequencer if you are able to map to its bank numbers. (since it has 32 banks/16 pads per bank)
I can only control it if I select an individual bank but since I cannot figure out how to map to the other banks I am stuck only using one bank at a time.
In the SP manual it lists Program Change numbers (1-32) which you have to send it to specify which bank you want to select your samples from.
I just figured with all the bells and whistles these command stations have that perhaps there was a way to do this effectively for sequencing.
Still open to ideas!

thanks

Not being familiar with the SP505, I am not clear on whst you want to do. I have some ideas: 1. You want to switch banks on the SP505. 2. You want to press something on the E-mu to make the SP505 switch banks. Are those two points correct? Also, do you have a link to the SP505 pdf manual?
