Effect Send Cord?

Effect Send Cord?

2013-11-29 by Scott E. Whitehead

Finally got my XL7 connected to Prodatum and Proteum. I was holding out for a USB connection to Windows 7 but finally surrendered and got traditional MIDI connections by using my Virus as a MIDI-USB bridge.; The programs make sound creation much much easier and I'm going to have to splurge for a real adapter now I suppose. Really opens the usefulness of the device up.

Some questions now that I'm finally on a roll.

Wasn't someone working on an Ipad app?

Have you ever bought a Proteus or other EMU synth on Craigslist and salvaged the ROM? Is that possible? I've got the purple ROM and there are a ton of sounds on it and like three of them are for me. Trade me?

Anyone ever consider buying the EMU sampler and going into the ROM-cutting business? I see them on Craigslist from time to time but I've always been a fail at making and sometimes at using samples. The Ultra 6400 is $300, you cut 20 custom ROMs, you get your ROMs, and you make your money back, right?

Anyone know how to connect a knob to the send levels? The effects setup on the CS's is just a shame but there must be a way to make it work for live tweaking. I can't find the sends in the cords and I can't (and don't expect to) find a CC for it. Maybe Sysex, not that it would help.

Finally, I'm glad that this mailing list is here but I feel weird spamming all of you with tech support requests. The Facebook group isn't exactly active, either. I get the sense folks hear that the CS is great, get one, get flummoxed on day one and sell it. There's got a be a better way...

As far as knob to effects send u have to choose an effects channel and then route to your ccs to fx sends in the patchbay on the preset a f a i k.
I make a fx preset and then take the instruments and the filters off. Then I route my ccs with its patchbay and fx parameters. Then I save it. Then I use it on channel 16a with global effects set to channel 16a. I like stereo delay b into verb on a. And I set my ccs to go for send level - cc a thru d are for processor A 1 thru 4 and e-h are for processor B 1 thru 4. Then u can just jump to channel 16 and ur sends are all right there. (And automatable too).

Thank you for sharing this. But I can`t seup this for myself. Can you tell me about how to setup this FX track more detailed? Can I use CS knobs on page programm for leveling sends? And how to setup separate send knob for each channel?

Matt replied to the knob setting thing. I will look for some posts related to how to set up an FX channel. I know it has been discussed several times. I used !FX as my FX presets, so perhaps search for that in the archives.

Now that you mention it, I do seem to recall someone mentioning working on an iDevice P2K editor. Not sure who, nor what the status is. I will look for the thread.

I have not bought gear through Craigslist; I have used ebay. You can get good deals, or you can get bad deals. Gotta be a wise shopper.

As buying an e-mu ultra sampler and burning ROMs for a profit, there are several issues:
(1) If you are thinking of cloning factory ROMS, E-Mu might frown on it--not sure, since they are not in the business of making ROMs; plus you need to add in the cost of flash simms--which would probably be more expensive than buying factory ROMS.
(2) If you are thinking of creating your own presets, it might be less costly to market them for the software line (Proteus VX, Proteus X, Emulator X).
On the other hand, if you want an e-mu ultra sampler for your own music making, you can usually find some good deals, depending on the condition, features, etc.

As far as this group goes, we have a large knowledge base in the archives, plus there is a lot of wisdom from members to be tapped into. We get several new member every month--usually people who just got a CS and want info. I also recommend the P2K Yahoo Group, if you are not already a member. The synth engine is the same and there can be discussions related to sound design (and other matters) over there that have not come up here. Plus there's a lot of info in the archives there as well.

The discussions here (and in those threads) might be useful to you. The second one points to two additional posts.

I am not at my gear now, but I believe the FXA/FXB sends can be found in the preset patchcords (i.e., global, non-layer level patchcords).

Hope this helps.

Steve

PS: Once you master this, there might be advanced things you can do with embedded sysex.

Also (and I know I wrote about this), sometimes people limit themselves to thinking of FX as the FXA/FXB chips; however, you can achieve a lot of FX with the P2K synth engine itself.

Thank you Steve and Matt. The track 16 fx solution is just the sort of creative problem solving I hoped for. Looking at it more and at the second PatchCords menu, which I didn’t understand at first, I have to imagine EMU knew they had a design problem that needed fixing. Makes so much sense now. And hard-setting MIDI channels to outs (as mentioned in Steve’s link) saves time and keeps it consistent. I donR17;t suppose I can connect a knob to ‘feedback’… Nikita, Steve’s email has a long-form walk-through but if you hit a snag, PM me.

The first question folks ask me when I talk about my EMU is ‘can you burn your own samples?’ Gotcha on the price of blank ROMs. Go figure. The synth engine is so good that I’ll get by for sure once I master these envelopes. More of a ‘neat to have’, I suppose. And the basses sound great. I’m really looking forward to practicing on a big system to see how they hold up.

Is anyone able to connect Proteum/Prodatum on Windows 7 from USB? E-Loader I got, but I don’t know what to use it for beyond backups.

Thanks,

Scott
