I'll take a guess at this mystery:
(1) Matt sent a personal message to the entire group by mistake.
(2) Mike pointed out that the the message went to "All" instead of just one person.
(3) Matt had no idea why Mike said "All" in reply, so he replied "What?"

Just a guess.

I don't think so, and I would say it can be one of the most interesting threads, if it works.

I'm already looking for some stuff I could linked here, along with some comments. And I would also suggest to not focus on the stylistics (e.g. I9;m not really a fan of house, but who cares, I'm not going to bash someone who spent the whole day on getting the right kick sound for the simplicity of his track), but rather on the use cases - someone used this to do that, both things are interesting...

Cheers,

1) sent message to group
2) only got a response that said all...
3)confusion ensues

Do u use ur outs as 3 stereo or 6 mono?
Do u use ur digital out and how? Do u use internal or external effects? Or both?
Does ur gf bug u late at night to get off the damn thing?
Etc.

i sequence samplers to make hip-hop beats, been doing it since 1988. never touched an mpc, by luck landed on an xl-7 in 2008 (after only having mirage since 1990...eh don't ask why lol)

after research and lots of beat making, came to realize that for on the fly sequencing the piece of real estate on the command station that contains the pads, transport and track mute buttons and the overall functionality of the command station is the ONLY sequencing machine i will ever use until i die (i am not joking). this is the most powerful interface for this type of sequencing ever realized and it should be copied in future designs. until then i have stock piled three command stations so far : )

here is a link  to a track i did with the mirage sequenced by the xl-7 then recorded to vhs tape and scratches later recorded into daw

Re: [xl7] Re: show and tell

2013-05-13 by Bruno

OK, so let's go...

I don't use sampler, and for the moment I rarely use CS for triggering external hardware. In our musical project there are three CSes, two with mirrored ROM set (MROM/XROM/P123/DRUM) and one with WORLD/BEAT/SONIQ/XROM. There are three persons involved into making patterns:
 - one person is a bass player has a very track oriented attitude, with a lot of drones and percussive tracks, and not so tight harmonic content;
 - one person is a "drummer" with a tracker past; he tends to play live with pads on top of the patterns, and his harmonic tracks are rather scarce;
 - one person (me) is a "pianist"; I use CS mostly as "a box with rhythms", playing with XMiX and turning tracks on/off, and tend to put a lot of sogn structure already in the pattern.

Only since the drummer joined we have one person who's attending CS all the time, not playing anything else (or operating mixer, like our bass player). We try to sync patterns between the twin CSes to have a common base.

We only use main outputs as a stereo out - we play with many synths and our guitar player uses Roland GR-55, which is also stereo, so usually we run out of inputs really quickly (the side effect of GAS).

After my desperate attempts to use SPDIF we gave up, since you cannot sync it to anything, and running it as a clock source which drives four other devices (two MOTUs + two ADATs) usually leads to disasters, like getting a 5 seconds dropout in the middle of improvised jam.

No external effects - at least not thru the insert loop (bass player has some stuff connected to his mixing desk tho).

My wife is very tolerant, but my 2.5 years old daughter is not - and she will poke her finger in my eye if I don't wake up enthusiastically to play with her, so "late at night" means no further than 0:30 (and even this not too often). However my daughter likes CS a lot, with all those things you can touch and manipulate...

URLs will come soon :-)

Bruno

Well, I just had to take a guess. I'm not used to the iTweet mode of messaging.

Looking forward to reading more of what people are up to. Would be nice to see links to sites where people host their E-Mu based music. I enjoy listening to all sorts of musical genres--well, maybe not >>all<<--but would be interested in hearing what others here have done with their E-Mus.

Re: show and tell

I enjoyed the music, too.

I haven't made music in several months, but this thread is inspiring me to want to carve out some time in a couple of months to do some all E-Mu music. I tend to mix my E-Mu with other gear, but it might be a fun challenge to just use E-Mus. (Since my main E-Mu is the P2500, I'd probably have to rely on a non-E-Mu keyboard as a controller.)

Anyone else up for taking an All E-Mu Challenge?

I have been using the emu with just about anything and everything i have a Roland sp808 sampler i load sounds from other gear which i don't tour with and records and such into the sp-808 usually as loops or drums and trigger from the emu, but the clock is slaved on the sp-808. and sometimes i use it with a kaoss pad kp3 also which i can sequence xy motion with the emu.
I use beats mode all the time and also the drum arps which rock.
I use effects on the insert jacks stereo so i don't need a mixer and can use the sampler effects on a send and kp3 on another send. Then i run everything thru alesis nanocompressor in stereo (the black one) and control my gain/compression before it hits the PA.
I been doing drum n bass and house, acid, minimal techno, and hip hop, experimental, and dustep also.  i perform live on stage at various parties festivals and raves and clubs in and around San Francisco.
Messed with mpc500 for a bit didn't like the stop start workflow. And electribes aren't precise enough with editing and such or have the arp features of the emu.
32 channels of internal external midi on 16 different tracks plus arps and beats mode is beast.

Steve

I`m using the CS with all 6 outputs, But SUB1 I have to input my virus rack via behringer compressor with sidechained kick signal or without (sended via same SUB1), and SUB2 I have connected to Korg KP3 with insert Y-cable. So I have addictional effect processor and sampler on SUB2.
All sync via midi. CS as master sequencer.
I wish a normal sampler e.g. akai or emu rack device, but than I need hookup good mixer.

I just recorded a track which has proved quite elusive to me for years now. It is techno made using the XL7 and the SP-808. 808 does the voice sample and the bass line using the step modulator and XL does the rest. Enjoy - https://soundcloud.com/triptastic1/go-to-high

Hello,

2013/5/13 Bruno <brunorc@...>

OK, after some discussion with the bass player we found we cannot figure out which piece would be most representative for its use of Command Station capabilities.

So please do it on your own: http://www.jamendo.com/pl/artist/370836/dzabownia-project

Just a note - in case you missed a description - it's 100% live recording, almost no further editing has been done (we got a bit better recently, we record in multitrack and we try to produce it properly, which means most of our recordings are at different stage of production process; so, real artists ship, indeed).

Also, another slightly edited live thing, recorded by me alone - there are two CSes, one is using the pattern, the second is using BEAT riff; it allows for very complex and morphing rhythms. On top of it some other synths (including E-mu PK-6): https://www.dropbox.com/s/tlog0ed46ctq11g/Phoenix%27%20wings.mp3

Hope you will enjoy it,

Bruno
