Composer ROM knob assignments

Composer ROM knob assignments

2013-03-06 by Ricard

Having recently gotten hold of a Composer ROM (quite frankly I bought a complete Proteus 2000 and ripped the ROM from it as I couldn't find a bare ROM at a reasonable price), I've noted that the default knob assignments in the presets often don't match the legend on the XL-7 knob panel. Fair enough I suppose, as they are designed for another machine, a bit of a pity though that E-Mu didn't match the assignments across the entire range. (The Proteus 2000 and the Composer ROM are older, so I suppose that could explain it; with more knobs on the XL-7 than on the Proteus I guess they figured they could make better use of the larger number of knobs).

One question though: the Proteus Pop Collection ROM apparently has the same sample set as the Composer ROM, but do the presets have the same knob assignment or have they changed them too so that they better match the XL-7 (and the other Command Stations as well as the Proteus 2500)?

12 controllers on proteus 2k so rom assignments fit knob assigbments on p2k not 16 knobs like on xx-7.

True for all racks with 12 knobs

Figures, although it would have been nice if the 12 knobs on the P2k were a subset of the 16 on the XL-7; i.e. 4 of the (least useful) knob assignments would simply be missing on the P2k.

Anyway, it at least implies that the Proteus Pop Collection ROM presets would have knob assignments for 16-knob machines, as it is factory installed in the P2500.

I seem to recall a discussion recently about the 12-controller ROMs and the 16-controller ROMs and related issues. If it wasn't here, it was in the P2K User group.

The controller assognments for the rack roms really arent that different and tbqh ur getting hooked up with an extra 4 controllers by using a command station. Dont be too dissappointed, the sounds are still great and everything is user assignable in user patches anyway.

No, it was defintely here. A veritable dissertation on 12 vs 16 knobs.

No, I'm not disappointed, while I must say that 90% of the sounds aren't terribly useful, and seem like they've put them in just to fill up the available banks, the remaining 10% are really nice and on their own warrant the ROM.

In general, I find the upside of the E-Mu ROMs is that the acoustic sounds really have an acoustic feel to them; the downside is that while there are a large number of acoustic drums, there are few electronic sets, mainly focusing on 808 and 909 style drums. The Protean Drums ROM has some Emulator II drum sounds which are nice, but the majority of drum sounds are still in the acoustic domain.

While I know I can change the knob assignments, it is a bit of a chore once than more than a couple of patches are involved, and I am still curious as to how the Pop Collection ROM compares to the Composer ROM in terms of patches.

Edit more patches and u will be much more happy with the sounds
Also a sampler is a must.

If u look in the instruments while editing patches you will find many more electronic kits.

The Protean Drums ROM has some Emulator II drum sounds which are nice, but the majority of drum sounds are still in the acoustic domain.

Make a template you like and then just edit instruments from there

and I am still curious as to how the Pop Collection ROM compares to the Composer ROM in terms of patches.

At one point I was thinking of locating one of the E-Mu samplers that can perform sound authoring for the XL-7, and then dumping a bunch of classic drum machine samples on a FLASH SIMM for use in the XL-7. But it seems like a lot of work, not to mention the fact that the FLASH SIMMs seem to be very rare - I've never seen one on eBay, although I don't go looking every day. So I've given up on that anyway.

I'll have to take a closer look.

Yes, I've got that ROM too, and I hang on to it really just for the E II drum sounds.
