XL7 dead?

XL7 dead?

2012-12-28 by builtbynanobots

Hi everybody,

I got an XL7 a couple of weeks ago and have just been trying to learn the basics of preset patch writing etc. and now the thing will not start.

When I turn it on I get a line of dots on the screen and then a lone cursor and that's it. It just stays like that. Before when I turned it on every LED on the thing lit up, but that doesn't happen now, just the dots and then the cursor.

Maybe useful info:

The last time I used it I was trying to edit patches with Prodatum. I have a mac running 10.6.8 I was unsuccessful there, I could get Prodatum to read the preset, but I couldn't get the info going the other direction. A couple of times I got an error message about sysex on the xl7. I was going to keep messing with it today to see if I could work it out.

Any help would be great, thanks!

I had the similar issue. You may be surprised, but what worked for me was opening the case, removing all ROMs and putting them back.

I wish you to get it working just with this!

I did what you said, but no luck. Thanks anyway Bruno.

I have to admit I'm a bit frustrated! Any other suggestions would be welcome, thanks!

I would start with testing all the power supply leads with a voltmeter and making sure they are right, and reseating all the connections between boards.

Thanks alot Matt, I have no clue how to do what you said haha. I'm completely ignorant when it comes to circuitry, electronics etc. I took it to a local music shop that does repair work on synths, I'll let you guys know what it turns out to be in case it's of interest to anyone.

thanks guys.

Re: XL7 dead?

2013-01-04 by builtbynanobots

I just got off the phone with the guy at the shop, he said all the voltages were ok, the only one he questioned was the 3 volt. He thinks I might have to replace a board but he doesn't know-

If I did fry a board or something would that effect the ROM cards? I'm thinking I might just try to sell the three cards in the thing to cut my losses. I'd perfer to fix it but money's pretty tight.

Any thoughts? Does anyone know of a good place that will repair an xl7?

I'm riding a real bummer on this one. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Contact EPR electronics in Florida they will ship you a new mainboard and give you a core charge refund for your old mainboard

Just wanted to thank Bruno for this tidbit. My MP7 was hanging at startup ('...' on the screen, all LEDs on and acting almost like it kept losing power once every second). Just opened it up, checked out R7 in the PSU and didn't see any leaking or bulging, so I reseated my 2 roms, and that seems to have solved the problem!

Cheers Bruno!
