Save/copy button doesn't seem to work. Am I screwed?

Save/copy button doesn't seem to work. Am I screwed?

2012-06-20 by coolout1

Hey guys,

I just bought an MP-7 for pretty cheap. Overall it seems to be in pretty good condition except one big thing. The save/copy button doesn't respond when pressed. The LED still blinks, but it never goes into the save menu.

At first I thought it was a little more loose than some of the other buttons so I popped a brand new replacement in and squirted a little calube mcl in, but that changed nothing. I then ran the panel diagnostic and it still doesn't light up when pressed like the other buttons.

I have the editor up and running on my netbook, so I guess I could use that to save, but that kinda defeats the whole purpose of going back to hardware.

Am I screwed?

Anyone?

I opened my MP-7 up and and tinkered around with the bad button. First I tried to re-solder the button and also soldered some wires as patch points to see if I could just the button to work. No dice...it still doesn't respond at all. I guess I could get a new front panel board from from EPR, but it costs more than what I paid for the unit.

So far the only workaround I see is to sync the MP with a software sequencer, record patterns into it, save them as midi files and then reload them into the MP using E-loader.

What a creativity killer. I wonder is there a way to send a sysex message or remap a button or key to trigger the save page.

I finally figured it out. This could also work for anyone else that gets some completely broken hardware buttons on a command station.

I used a little app from Bome's to send midi sysex messages to the MP7. Basically putting it into remote control mode, initiating a remote press of the save/copy button, and another sysex command taking it out of remote mode. All I have to do is just open the script and hit send and I CAN NOW SAVE MY PATTERNS!!!

I guess I could also use Ableton Live (along with ClyphX) and assign the sysex script to a key on a midi controller or the MP7 itself. The highest key on the keyboard or the touchstrip for instance.

Here's a link to the app:

Here's the sysex command:

When I read your post, my first thought was, "Remote control mode."

In addition to using a full-fledged computer for working around problems like this would be to build a microprocessor-based E-Mu remote controller.

In fact, I can envision something like a midified arduino with a whole mess of buttons to do things remotely with single button presses which send out remote control sysex strings.

just a thought.

midibox can do it all....you just have to build it, and maybe program it.

Peavey pc1600x can do this - no need to build anything (unless you want to).

true enough, more of a comment to steve's comment. FWIW I think the
novation remote series controllers could do this as well, probably a few
other commercial products.

I used Behringer BCR2000 to control my MP-7 with broken volume pot using SysEx.

Excellent suggestions!!! The bottom line: any piece of hardware or software that can send user defined sysex commands can use E-Mu remote control.

As for me, while I have software that can send user defined sysex commands, I don't have any hardware that will do that--unless I use e-loader to embed the commands into an e-mu sequencer pattern.

As I had been already thinking of making a custom midi controller with an arduino (including doing tests of midi i/o), setting up some buttons to do stuff via remote control sysex should be very doable. I am thinking of things like a button that increase tempo by a set amount and one that decreases it by a set amount, single buttons programmed to execute multiple changes over a controllable amount of time, etc.

I guess that puts me in the "build it only if I want to" category. :) But, as noted, there are plenty of other hardware and software options.

I wonder why no one has made a complete virtual remote control for command stations? As far as sysex goes...I need to research some cheap solutions.

My first thought was one of those old Anatek Pocket boxes. They made a bunch of little specialty midi devices about the size of a cigarette pack. Both the sequencer and record one send sysex. They're a bit rare though.

Maybe it's possible to just use eloader to copy the sysex midi file to the MP7 and then connect the midi in to midi out.

I have a number of midi controllers, including a Behringer BCF, so perhaps I could get it to trigger the sysex string in standalone mode.

Like I said, using Bomes or even a full sequencer isn't problem, but I bought the MP7 so I could get away from the computer.

Steve:
I can think of a whole bunch of reasons, including:
*Unless there are hidden controls, not everything on the CS/P2500 is available via remote control.
*Sysex is kind of esoteric; remote control mode is event more so.
*In remote control mode, there is a ton of sysex data generated; so unless it is constantly being turned on and off, there is potential to clog the midi dataflow.
*To me the beauty of E-Mu's remote control is not that you can duplicate buttons externally, but that you can develop in essence scripts that can do things that are much more complex.

On the other hand, I think it would be possible to build a 4 x 4 knob + beats trigger controller for the single rack unit modules that might be useful for non-CS/P2500 owners. Not sure its worth putting in extra buttons for everything else.

That being said, it might be nice to have a tempo display for those units that you don't have to page through menus to get to. Also, it might be convenient to have a bank of 32 buttons with leds to trigger latched arps on either the 1 rack unit modules or the command stations.

Just some purely speculative thoughts.

Steve:
I have embedded remote control sysex in patterns. If anyone wants to do this, let me recommend a strategy I have used. I have placed an embedded RemoteControlOFF at 125^7 and 127^7, with RemoteControlON sandwiched in between at 126^7. I found this helps avoid accidentally turning RC on when scrolling through patterns.

Those patterns should still be in the files section.

I would be cautious about trying to create a save preset embedded. I once created a Remote Control script that would randomize a whole bank of presets. I chose not to make it available, because I was concerned that someone would run it and wipe out a whole bank of presets they hadn't backup up.

Steve:
From what others have said about the Behringer (and other controllers) you should be able to do that. I think it was in the P2K group that someone found a solution using some Kenton gear.

Hope this helps.

2014 update...just in case anyone ever has a similar problem with buttons and knobs going south and it's the actual PC board that's bad. I uploaded both the midi file and syx version of the remote 'save/copy' button press to this files section.

Using my PC, opening up a app, and sending sysex just to press the save button was workflow killer. I found my CS collecting dust, so I found a some alternatives to sending sysex. The Behringer BCF works and is a kind of one-stop solution for replicating nearly all the buttons and knob on the CS. I also found a android app that will send sysex. You're phone or tablet has to support USB host mode, you need a OTG cable, and class-compliant USB midi interface. Once you've jump through those hoops it works...but is not a very neat solution.

The best thing I've found is to just play the sysex midi file from my MPC2000xl. Plus they really complement each other well. I can use either to sequence the other machine, but I find myself using the MPC sequencer with CS keyboard for melodies and the MPC pads for drums/samples. The have sysex midi file autoload when I boot up my MPC, so it's always ready. The only thing I've yet to figure out is the best way to save the preset/patches with each MPC sequence.

Can't you put the program changes in the mpc?

I would go for BCF. Some time ago the volume knob of my XL-7 was broken, and I was using BCR 2000 (with sysex) to ontrol the volume of XL-7... far from being super comfortable, but was doing the trick. Which gives me an idea for another thread...

You probably thought of this, but you could also use a midi file to send sysex to simulate the Save/Copy button press from the CS.
