Mapping effects sends for fun and profit

Mapping effects sends for fun and profit

2012-06-13 by Matt

1) create a new preset name it something like EFX:delay and reverb
2) open preset edit and go to cords. turn off all the patch cords in the new preset and all preset patch cords.
3) under preset patchcords assign the following: #01 midi a -> FXAsend1 +100, #02 midi b -> FXAsend2, #03 midi C -> FXAsend3, #04 midi D -> FXAsend4, #5 midi E -> FXBsend1, #6 midi f -> fxbsend2, #7 midi g -> fxbsend3, #8 midi h -> fxbsend4.
5) put the effects on Delay and Reverb or whatever effect algorithm you want and save the preset.
6) put the new preset on channnel 16a or whatever channel u choose to use for your fx channel
7) go to global and set the FX MODE to enabled
8) inside global set FX MULTIMODE CONTROL set the channel to be 16a or whatever you chose earlier
If you point a track at this preset you can now modulate and record your FX send amounts.
Yay!

Really nice! I did it and it works super-well.
Thanks for the awesome tip.

Works well with SubOuts too.

Nice, starightforwrd instructions for creating an FX preset template with with patchcords. When I was using presets FX presets, I didn't set it up with patchcords like you suggest, but I like the idea!!!

Related ideas:
I would use the prefix !FX so it would be there up front in the navigator (well, right after a blank/space.
I would set the ROM instruments on all 4 layers to 0000 :None.

When I get a chance, I am going to try it with patchcords as you suggest.

(As we have discussed before--too bad the E-Mu returns aren't routed through FX. Think of all the empty 1 RU modules out there with no sound roms that could be used as FX processors!!!)

Again, thanks for the tip!

Re: Mapping effects sends for fun and profit

I just did a simple FX preset template. Having the cords set up like you suggest is indeed fun! I used knobs IJKL for FXA an MNOP for FXB.

Let me add a few tweaks and variations to your excellent suggestion. (I look forward to see variations from others as well.)

1. For the knobs to go from 0 to full [whether its +100 or something lower], I set the FXA/FXB sends to 0%. Baseline FX can be achieved with small values with the FXA/FXB SEND AMOUNTS parameters. I also set the Initial Controller Amount to 000 so I have a consistent starting point.

2. To have FX be subtractive when turning knobs clockwise, I set the patchcord baseline send amount to 100% and the patchcord amount to -100.

Fun stuff for sure!! (Gonna fiddle some more with the corded FX presets.) Thanks for starting the thread.

Set this up as well. Definitely fun for live tweaking. Does anyone know of a way to control the effects settings (feedback, etc...)? Is that possible on the CS?

Easy.

If you are looking for a way to have CCs change FX settings other than the send amounts, I don't think that is possible. It might be possible with sysex; check out the sysex manual to see if the FX parameters are listed. (I will look myself when I have a chance.)

I have used !FX presets on a designated FX channel to switch FXA/FXB settings.

Re: Mapping effects sends for fun and profit: Sysex: Master Effects Parameters

Here's the table from the sysex manual (v. 2.2). If you don't have it, its in the files section. If you have an external controller that can send out sysex data on the fly, you might try these. I am not sure if changing these parameters when FXA/FXB are sounding causes any audio glitches, but that might be desirable in some types of music.

Here's the FX table from the sysex manual (v. 2.2) for presets. I am not sure what happens to the audio if these parameters are changed on the fly. (The table in the sysex manual is prettier; Yahoo Groups messages don't do tables well.)

Cheers Steve!

So the CS can't send sysex info from it's own knobs? I get midi data flow I just haven't delved into sysex as of yet. I have a BCR laying unused, maybe this will be something to figure out with it...

You're a boss!

I have heard good things about the BCR and the BCF--super nice that it has the ability to send sysex. I am not sure if it was here or in the P2K User Group (or both), but people have discussed using these with their E-Mus. If I recall correctly, there is even some third party software available. If I run across the references, I will post them.
