Capture midi pattern out notes back into Command Station

Capture midi pattern out notes back into Command Station

2012-05-15 by intrepidpete

So I have a midi chain with sequencer and a bunch of gear, and some of the gear does arps/patterns/beats. I can send chords down the midi chain, and capture arp/pattern/beat notes back into my sequencer.

When my Command Station gets delivered this evening, this will be my first unit with real-time recording sequencer and arp/pattern/beat capability within the same unit. So can I do this all right from within the XL7? So you would record song chords on track/channel 1, then have arp/pattern/beats triggered from those chords go out on a different track/channel, then have the sequencer immediately record those notes to a different track.

Can't wait to find out if it can do that. It sure would be a nice way to lay down a song, first come up with the chords, then experiment with lots of different arps/patterns/beats and when you find things you like, record them right into other tracks within the same song/sequence.

I'll be eager to hear how this goes for you.

What you describe is pretty much exactly what I do with the Vortex software I've posted here about ... except of course I'm recording into my DAW, Cubase, and then triggering my CS and other modules.

What I also do, is when I find a particularly tasty riff on a preset audition, I record it into Cubase, examine the midi file and then duplicate it and save it as a preset in Vortex. Then I have the riff ready to be transposed to any scale in any key in any octave at a moments notice.

It sounds like you have some good plans to develop a work flow that best suits your needs. One preliminary caution: while you can assign each track to one midi channel, you don't have to. So while you might start off that way, keep an open mind for maximum flexibility.

Another thing: arps/beat are functions of specific presets, not of tracks.

When you get the sequencer, have fun exploring. 'Personally, I think there's a lot of flexibility--although admittedly, there may be some things you might want to do, that you will have to try to figure out how to do it (or what workarounds might be needed).

You might have to do a physical midi loop. Out Midi A and then send all midi in the midi channel bank B where you could record the ARP notes.
