Can beats mode midi be sent midi out?

Can beats mode midi be sent midi out?

2012-05-10 by D F Tweedie

Late to the party ... as usual. I'm just now delving into Beats Mode.

A little ironically, I've been beta testing a new midi VSTi called Vortex from HGSounds.com, which seems to have developed a parallel, but expanded idea into software, i.e., multitimbral sequencing of short sequences (riffs) using a dedicated octave on the keyboard to trigger individual sequences, each tied to a specific midi note or multisequence combinations of the 12 available sequences per preset or 'instrument.' The concept is quite amazing.

OK, I get how using the knobs or triggering by midi note increases the 'busyness' and 'variability' of the played loop ... undoubtedly by triggering different riffs or combinations of riffs setup on different midi tracks ... and recording the total audio output is no issue.

I'd like to learn more about the midi messages sent to those sequences and hopefully learn to capture/ record it as midi data, if possible, in order to send midi data on a per track basis to trigger any specific riff directly without relying on Beats Mode. That way I could further tweak, copy/ paste, etc. that midi data in my sequencer to set up single voice midi tracks used to 'track' just one instrument.

I've already tried recording the midi output while tweaking the knobs. I get note data, but when sent it only retriggers the tweaking of the beats mode preset to duplicate how I originally tweaked it, it doesn't return any track or channel midi data from the riffs being triggered internally.

I suspect the answer is going to be, 'No, that's not possible.' But it never hurts to ask.

FWIW, using Vortex, after setting up my riffs or sequences in the software and setting channel filters in my DAW's midi track input, I can use a trigger midi track to play or draw in the notes to trigger the sequences in patterns of my liking and then record the midi out data so that I have separate midi tracks for each of the 12 sequences. After that, the sky's the limit.

I'm not sure, but maybe setting Arp -> Arp/Riff MIDI Out to "transmit
riff" or "transmit both" would help. Beats are (technically) just
multichannel riffs.

This app you mentioned sounds interesting. I wanted to do something
similar with XL-7 and it's patterns - I would just like to control the
business of my patterns, by turning the tracks on/off using a knob. It
could be done by putting a piece of software between a knob that
generates MIDI CC (e.g. Behringer BCR2000) and XL-7, the only thing I
needed was a sysex to turn the track on/off, but I was unable to find
it just by digging in manual. Maybe some experimentation will help...

Anyway, I think the list will appreciate your review of Vortex, once
you know it enough to write one.

Cheers,

Bruno
