Rack mounting XL7

Rack mounting XL7

2012-05-06 by Bruno

Hi guys,

I'm wondering if:
a) my rack is weird
b) my XL-7 is weird
c) all XL-7s are weird

I mounted my XL-7 in a rack and everything is nice and dandy, except
that XL-7 occupies a bit too much space. It's mounted in an adjustable
angled rack (similar to this one:
http://img.etonals.com/p/large/MC_ARS55.jpg), at the bottom of the
adjustable frame. All units above it have to be shifted a bit up,
which is not nice and costed me a hell of effort to fit it there, and
made me wondering if something went wrong in the E-mu factory.

Pointer: it's *very* early model, which came with printed manual
revision A and CD-ROM with revision A in PDF. I still have an MP-7
(which I'm planning to sell), which seems to be of some later sort,
but I'm not sure if I want to disassemble my rack and try to fit it
there. Also, I actually wanted to get XL-7 (I prefer yellow to
purple), so using MP-7 would not be an option.

I was thinking at some point about shoving the bottom side of the
case, but that was only a momentary lapse of weakness. I wouldn't harm
my beautie :-)

Erm... so, any experiences to share from fellow rack-mounted-CS owners?

Bruno ... I racked my command station at the top of a similar rack. That way you don't have to lose any rack spaces as you can get to the inputs on CS from the top easily.

Mine didn't have that top cross rod shown in the picture of this Adam 21-Space Adjustable Angle Rack Stand ... but I don't think you need it , once you have screwed in the CS.

I am using mine primarily as a sound module ... so I don't mind not having the pads at the bottom of the angled section of the rack.

That unit looks pretty good. I bought a cheaper one, but had to get those expensive SKB screw and nut kits ... since it didn't have the drilled/ tapped screw openings in the frame.

On this topic, where might one buy some rack ears at a reasonable price? Any ideas? Thanks!

I got mine with XL-7, and they weren't original - two pieces of alu
profile, with holes drilled in appropriate places. Which seems a good
idea, looking at ridiculous prices being asked at ebay.

This seems an idea. I will probably try to adjust the rack ears - as I
mentioned in another post, they are not original, although they don't
seem to excess the proper length.

I'm using mine as a sequencer driving the rhythm in my studio, so pads
are not so important, but I do care about those lovely 16 buttons... I
will check if they are still reachable after moving the unit to the
top.

I'm making two sets just as you describe. The profile is 1"x2", or if all you can find is 2x2 you can rip one edge on a table saw....carefully.

I think it will be fine. When I sit at my desk with the CS at the top of the rack, if I extend my arm straight out at shoulder height, the top row of edit knobs are right there ... and everything else, including the buttons and center panel, are in easy reach.

I will try it, if fiddling with ears won't solve the issue. "Arms
straight out at shoulder height" (as I tried it sitting on my chair)
may be good for some adjustments, but I'm afraid it can become
painful, if one works with CS controls constantly.

It took me some time to find a layout of instruments, where everything
was "on its place". While it may sound ridiculous, the ergonomy of
your environment may hamper or boost your creativity. Having a quick
access to different segments of edit menu thanks to the mentioned 16
buttons makes a huge difference between any P2K-based module and
Command Stations. Last time when I was preparing presets for the gig
it was a breeze; actually, I was working with PK-6, but it's the same.
And being able to quickly recall 16 presets with those buttons in PK-6
makes it even more user-friendly.

I'm 100% with you on ergonomics. Over the years I've repeatedly reworked my studio so what I need most is comfortably within reach and all I need to see is easily visible.

I didn't mean you had to extend your arm ... I should have just said that the top of the racked CS is at shoulder height when I'm sitting in my studio ... think scratching your chin height.

BTW ... I love these adjustable racks. I have two. The view angle is infinitely superior to any other type of rack setup.

Yep, it works. I just moved it to the top of the angled rack. I only
had to make the whole adjustable part a bit more horizontal, to make
my Supernova (which went to the bottom) fitting better. Thanks for
suggestion!
