Using Command Centre as Midi Controller for Reason/Ableton

Using Command Centre as Midi Controller for Reason/Ableton

2012-04-23 by tado2099

It should be possible since its all MIDI, but is it a case of just plugging in?.

Howabout, switching instruments with Reason and the MP7.

Also I know you can step sequence on the MP7 but do the buttons do the same thing on Redrum step sequencer?

Thanks

The midi message sent by the Command Station is 'hard wired.' It send a specific midi message, How the Command Station itself uses that specific midi message is part of the design of the Command Station.

When you use the Command Station for a 'midi controller,' you generally have to use 'midi learn' from the program.

This means there is a procedure in the other software where you press or activate something telling the program: "get ready, I want you to link the control I press in the program with the next midi message you receive."

Each program uses midi messages in slightly different ways. You have to learn from the program how to do that. Then you have to learn from the hardware how to send the message you want. Generally, there is a way to build a 'template' to load, so that what you teach the program is remembered the next time it is connected to that same midi hardware controller and that midi port is enabled for the track in the program or the program itself.

Sound complicated? It is and it isn't. On the one hand you are always doing the same thing from program to program and there are a limited number of midi messages that can be sent. On the other hand each program and to a lesser extent each bit of hardware uses those messages in slightly different ways.

Hope this helps.

I have never used Reason, so I cannot suggest anything there. The idea of using midi learn is an excellent one; I just don't know how its implemented in Reason.

I doubt you can use all of the buttons on the Command Station to do the same things they do on the Command Station in Reason (e.g., step record).

I have used the 16 knobs on my P2500 to control other gear--basically by sending CCs and mapping to the parameters I wanted to change in the external gear.

Also, the trigger buttons can be set up to send specific notes. They can be set up to be sent externally via midi. So, if Reason has midi learn which can do different functions, perhaps you can use the trigger buttions based on the different notes. Of course, if it could do that, you could also map a keyboard to Reason's functions.

Command Stations have what's called Remote Control Sysex mode, but I would be exteremly surprised if Reason could map E-Mu sysex commands to its own functions.

In short, I'd expect that the E-Mu's knobs and the triggers could be used for any software with midi learn. If the software resonds to basic midi transport commands (start, stop, continue), those could probably be used, too.

There is no practical way of using the Command Station's encoder to send out program change messages to Reason.

I hope this helps. Its about all I can think of. Maybe there's someone else here who uses Reason that can help.

Can you use the footswitch for sending program change?

Hmmmmmm. Under controllers, the footswitch jacks on the P2500 (and I assume the command stations) can be set to Preset+ and Preset-.

Lemme see if that can be used to transmit a patch change to external gear.

I tried all combinations I could think of and I could not get a foot pedal plugged into footswitch jack 1 to send a patch change externally--just internally.

Maybe there is a way, but I couldn't figure it out.
